As they followed behind the centaur, he allowed his mind to wander. He couldn’t shake Callum’s warning from his thoughts. Centaurs are capable of creating devices that can take you down mid-flight. He frowned and began to roll his wings in a circle, the muscles in his shoulders stretching and flexing. What sort of.. device… could ground a gifted flier, and fully grown Pegasus? Do those responsible for all this chaos have such devices? Was Callum walking them into a trap?
The harsh scent of smoke was only growing stronger and it forced him from his thoughts. As his focused shifted, he realized a new, potent smell was coming from the deep wood. Rayfire couldn’t quite place it: he had never smelled anything like it before. The other Pegasi behind Callum immediately smelled it too, and almost in unison, they lifted their heads upward to get a better sense of what it was. Rayfire inhaled deeply before grunting and wagging his head back and forth. It was rancid; he could practically taste it. The other Pegasi seemed to come to the same conclusion as sounds of stifled disgust echoed between stallions. (Yeaaahhhhh I doubt all the Pegasi of Sun herd will react to the smell of cooking meat as politely and calmly as Fawnroot 😬)
Rayfire gritted his teeth and focused on what Callum was doing instead of on the horrid smell that seemed to burn his insides.
Callum surveyed the area, tracking the traces in the scuffed dirt, and pointed in the direction of the presumed intruders. Rayfire peered across the creek and frowned. “They’re close.” Much too close to Sun herd for comfort. How did the patrols miss them? Unless… these intruders have only been in the territory a few hours and snuck in between shifts.
“Do you have a plan?” He asked stiffly, sending a glance behind him at the alert, battle ready steeds who stared at Callum with loyal, expectant gazes.
(Yeah I think Kavani and Kollin did get a snack but I don’t think they’d eaten it yet! Or if they did, it wasn’t very filling, as you said)
Kavani:
She blinked at Bhearit as he folded the sheet, and nonchalantly offered his own home as a place to stay for the night since her own place was practically destroyed. She’d hate to intrude in Bhearit’s home and private life. Kollin would have a blast, but Kavani didn’t think she’d be able to sleep tonight, no matter who’s home she was in.
Kavani realized that Bhearit had asked her another question and was most likely waiting for a response. “Ah…”
She didn’t like the idea of Bhearit and Kollin doing all the hard work outside while she tended to the food. But, she was hungry, and she knew Kollin was hungry, so was there a better option?
“Sure, whatever. I can start to make food. I need to put away the groceries I got today anyway.”
Kavani looked back at Bhearit, and studied him for a long moment. Really studied him: his shoulders were set and his face was tight and determined. He scanned the yard, and as they talked, she realized he was folding any sheets or blankets that he came across. But despite the work, she didn’t miss the deep tiredness in his eyes. Like he was ready to collapse and sleep right now, but a secret source was keeping him going.
“I’ll be right back.” She said suddenly and turned away quickly. Her hooves moved automatically, she opened the tent, and the air immediately sucked out of her lungs. The tent was almost as messy as the yard. As if in her desperation to find her husbands lost wedding band, Kavani’s dam threw all the larger, bulky materials and items outside and dumped out all remaining possessions inside. Soot and ash from the fire pit streaked across the floor, along with utensils, bowls, rags, pens, paper, and any other household items. Their sleeping mats were dirty and ragged, and her mother’s hoof prints were everywhere. Kavani cringed and sighed, rubbing her aching shoulder absentmindedly.
“Bhearit first. Just start with Bhearit.” She said aloud and began digging through the mess to find a canteen. She usually kept them in her personal chest with her clothes since she always brought one to training, but that chest had been emptied and her clothes were most likely thrown outside with all others.
Eventually she found it laying in a wad under a couple upside down books. Thankfully, her mother had merely tossed the canteen aside and hadn’t poured out the water inside.
Stepping over Kollin’s mat that had been dragged towards the entrance, she exited the tent and headed back towards Bhearit.
“Here,” she said with a tight voice when she reached him, and held out the canteen. “You said you were thirsty? Water’s probably not cold, but… I hope it’s alright.”
