The day had finally arrived. Nightsky’s stomach threatened to turn inside out with anxiety, but he pushed the feelings down. His dam had to adore his chosen mate, she just had to! His soon to be mate (if his mother accepted her) trotted up to him and lovingly nuzzled him.

“Sunray,” Nightsky hesitantly addressed her. “Have you ever actually talked to Flameblaze?”

“Of course I’ve talked to your mom! Well, at least I’ve said “hello” once, I think. Now that you’ve mentioned it, what does she look like?” Sunray cocked her head at her best friend since forever.

“I think she has been avoiding you. I’m pretty sure she at least saw you when you were born, but we don’t share nests, so it’s not like you could see each other that often,” Nightsky trailed off. In truth, he was kind of happy Sunray hadn’t remembered what Flameblaze looked like. After the fight with Nightwing, his mother had been scarred from the inside and the outside. “I’ll be right back.”

As quickly as he could, Nightsky zipped to his mother’s and his nest, searching for her. “Mother? Are you here?”

After checking the most likely spots to find her, Nightsky returned to Sunray, not at all expecting the sight that greeted him. A huge jungle cat stalked Sunray, and most surprising, his mother, right next to her.

At the sound of his landing, both mares swiveled to face him, their eyes a mixture of relief, fear, love, and hope. As Nightsky studied the creeping cat, in his heart, he knew his fears had somehow come true. He would have to choose one, and only one to save, or they would all perish. Or would they?
