Flameblaze sighed, and wearily got to her feet, “C’mon, Sunray, we’re no help to Nightsky just sitting here.”
Wiping her wet eyes with her wing, Sunray nodded, “You’re right. What should we do?”
“You’re asking me?” Surprised, Flameblaze spun to face the young mare.
“Yes. I’m, well, I guess I’m not cut out for leading,” She bowed her head. “Nightsky was wrong.”
“If you’re sure…” Trailing off, Flameblaze closed her eyes and concentrated. “We need the medicine mare.”
“I’ll go get her,” Without so much as a look back, Sunray shot off and hurled herself at full speed towards where she believed Elmleaf was last seen.
“Whoa, what are you doing in my dream?” Nightsky turned and noticed a pegasus with olive green wings and pale blue eyes.
“Uh, I’m pretty sure this is my dream and you’re the one in it,” As soon as the words escaped his mouth, the other pegasus huffed.
“So, wait, then are we sharing a dream? I don’t share,” the pegasus flapped her wings in defiance. “Get your own dream.”
“I’m Nightsky,” Friendly and good humored as always, he extended his wing. “And you are?”
She whacked his wing away, “Not amused.”
“Oh, well, I should be getting back to reality. I think I was bleeding to death, last I remember,” the mare’s expression changed from hostile to slight pity.
“Ouch,” Externally wincing, she nervously pawed the ground. “I’m Icefrost.”
“Nice to meet you. Do you have any idea why I’m in your dream?” Nightsky watched as she daintily tilted her head.
“I’m not quite certain,” she hesitated. “But, just out of curiosity, where do you live?”
“In Jungle Herd, of course,” he stated, matter-of-factly. Icefost’s eyes widen, and her nostrils flared.
“…And that’s what I was afraid of. My herd is not on great terms with Jungle Herd,” her fierce gaze locked with Nightsky’s and knocked him back a step.
“Then do you have any idea why I’m here?” Just say yes, he silently begged.
The mare shook her head, her silky mane flashing in the sunlight, “Absolutely no clue.”
Nightsky resisted heaving a sigh, “So… Which herd do you belong to?”
Shifting uncertainly, Icefrost avoided his piercing eyes, “I don’t see how that’s relevant.”
“How is that not relevant?” A light pounding echoed in his ears, but he ignored it, focusing on Icefrost’s response.
“Fine. I’m from River Herd. There, happy?” A single tear rolled down her face and a flower sprouted where it had dropped, which she quickly smashed with her black hoof.
“Why are you upset?” The drumming in his ears thundered loudening, and he chose to ignore the flower randomly sprouting.
“It’s just-” she was cut off abruptly when Nightsky woke up screaming.
“Shh, shh, it’s okay,” his mother, Flameblaze was there, looking down at his with soft eyes. “You’re alright.”
Gently, he shook his head, trying to clear it, “I had this crazy dream.”
“Don’t think too hard right now. There is something I want to discuss though. Sunray and I were talking, and it seems like you two just aren’t right for each other. After she was too dazed to think properly or lead, well, it’s just not a great fit. You come from a great line, Nightsky. She agrees,” Flameblaze tilted her head elegantly and tried not to stare at Nightsky's anguished expression.
“Agrees that we shouldn’t be mates?” he couldn't and wouldn't believe what she had just said. “Yes. I know this may be hard to process at this particular moment, but just trust me,” Her tone hardened slightly and Nightsky's nostrils flared.
“So, you’re telling me that the mare I chose isn’t good enough?” Nightsky knew his voice and temper were rising, but just couldn't bite his tongue.
“It’s not like that. Really,” Nightsky had always believed his mother was wise, but right now? He didn't know what to think.
“Forget it. Just let me sleep, please,” All his thoughts spun and he just wanted to lie down right now, not think about life-changing decisions.
“Nightsky-” she began, but he caught her off.
“Please,” he turned his head away and focused on ignoring his dam. Why did life have to be so complicated?

(You all may have noticed how I don’t really describe the pegasi’s appearance, other than their eyes and wings. That is on purpose. I decided the reader could be the one who develops what they sound and look like. At the end of this series, if you read it all and want to, you can comment what you think they what their coats, mane and tail, etc. look like.
Oh, and not sure if anyone saw, but Flameblaze leading made it so Sunray and Nightsky don't end up together. Little choices have big effects. 😉)
