Morningmist stared at the huge forest ahead of them.
“We are finally here!” She whinnies, her voice quivering. Riversun stamped her hoof.
“We are ready.” She nuzzles Morningmist. Starfrost joins in the group hug.
Together, the three pegasi walked into the Trap.
~
Meanwhile, another group was also arriving. Icefeather, Spiderhoof, and their minions.
Icefeather stopped in front of the Trap. “Take the traitor out.” He neighs, pointing at Pebblewind. “I want him to see what we have done.”
Spiderhoof obeyed and took out the silver bead she held in her hoof. The silver from Pebblewind’s eyes and hooves returned to the bead. His eyes returned to their normal green color.
“What happened?!?” Pebblewind rears, scared.
“What do you think?” Spiderhoof laughs. “We used mind control!” Pebblewind grows more frightened as he sees Lakeroot and the others mindlessly staring at him.
“H-How?” Pebblewind stuttered. Icefeather trots up.
“With this.” He snarls taking the silver bead from Spiderhoof. “The last of Nightwing’s starfire. After the final fight with Star, the last remains of their starfire were left in the ash. Star hid them at the Spy Tree, but we found one.” Pebblewind gasps.
“I-Is there another?” Pebblewind stutters, slowly stepping back.
“Stop asking so many questions!!!” Icefeather bellows and uses the silver bead to put Pebblewind back under his control.
Icefeather looks around at his small army. “We will win!!!” He trumpets. “Follow me.”
Icefeather, Spiderhoof, and the mind-controlled pegasi charged into the Trap
~
“There it is.” Morningmist whispered. “The Spy Tree.” The giant tree stood tall, and a huge hole had already been dug on one side of the tree.
It was nearly midnight now, and Morningmist would soon become a yearling.
“It looks like Icefeather and Spiderwing have already been here.” Starfrost pointed at two feathers in the hole.
“We are too late!” Morningmist cried, slumping to the ground in defeat. Star’s secret had already been found.
~
Spiderhoof peeked through a bush. “I see them!” She whispered excitedly to Icefeather. “Shall we put them under our control?”
“Not yet!” Icefeather barked. “I want them to suffer first.”
~
“Don’t give up yet, Morningmist!” Riversun comforted. “They might have not found it yet.” Starfrost nodded.
“I guess...” Morningmist said sadly stood back up. “It would be worth a shot.”
She trotted to the other side of the tree and began to dig. Riversun and Starfrost joined her.
“SNAP!” A twig broke. The three friends turned and stared at the sight.
“P-Pebblefrost?” Morningmist stuttered. “Lakeroot? What are you doing here? Why did you bring everyone else?”
“They won’t answer.” Icefeather stepped out of the bushes. “They are under our control.”
Riversun blew silver starfire at Icefeather’s wings, but Spiderhoof stepped forward and caught it with the silver bead. The bead glowed brighter.
“Attack!” Icefeather trumpeted, and let his minions lead the charge. Defensively, Riversun and Starfrost stepped in front of Morningmist.
“Dig, Morningmist! Find Star’s secret! It may be able to save us!” Riversun whinnied sharply as she began to fight the minions. Morningmist hesitated, not wanting to leave her friends.
“Dig!” Starfrost commanded, and flung himself into the fight.
Morningmist turned and dove towards the tree. As quick as she could, she began to dig.
She ignored the squeals of pain and smells of burning wings. She knew Riversun and Starfrost would do anything to protect her. Twice, she had felt hooves meet her back, but both times one of her friends would take on her opponent.
Finally Morningmist’s hooves meet something solid. She wrenched it out of the ground, and cupped the tiny object in her wing.
She looked across the battlefield, and was not surprised to see that both of her friends had fallen. Everyone was converging on her.
Morningmist smiled as she revealed the object in her wing. A small, golden bead. It was time to fight starfire with starfire.
Ohh "fight starfire with starfire" like "fight fire with fire"!
