After the heart wrenching night of learning about Moonsight and all the horrid things he had done, Ravenleaf and her two foals snuggled close and fell asleep together, protecting each other from Snow herd's blistering winds.
The sun rose quicker than the steeds of Snow herd had wished, so Ravenleaf awoke at dawn with quite the surprise.
A stallion, about 3 years old with massive hooves, stood nearby. He looked like he had been waiting for hours because he was slouching and his eyes were downcast.
Ravenleaf slowly scooted away from the 2 foals, not wanting to wake them. The mare stood and walked toward the strange stallion, her wings flared and her eyes impatient. "Can I help you?" She asked, blinking the tiredness away from her eyes. The steed perked up, suddenly puffing out his chest and folding his wings neatly, as if he had been standing like that the whole night.
"Uhhh....." He stammered and realized that he had forgotten why he was up here in the first place. Ravenleaf cocked a hoof and raised an eyebrow, unamused. "It's alright. Take your time." She quirked in a sarcastic tone that didn't help the stallion to focus or remember.
He blushed and lowered his head, embarrassed by her words. His head suddenly shot up again and he grinned, "Oh yeah! I was sent by Twistwing to give you a message. You are to meet him in the Northern mountain ranges in 2 hours for a briefing. Bring only yourself and the dud from Sun herd." He stated, before turning away and lifting off with a clumsy stumble and glided back down the steep hill to the meadow.
Ravenleaf rolled her eyes at the awkward stallion's departure, but soon, her face twisted with worry and she pawed the ground, "What does Twistwing want from Alderflare? Why so early in the morning?" She asked herself but she figured all questions would be answer at the meeting.
She turned back to the 2 foals that were huddled together. She sighed and walked over to Alderflare and Whisperfrost. Ravenleaf lowered her head and gently nudged the colt and filly awake. "Alderflare? Whisperfrost? Wake up. It's time to get up." She said sweetly. The brindle colt shifted and his eyes fluttered open. "Huh? ...What's up?" He asked, drowsily raising his head and yawning. Ravenleaf snorted and licked his ears with her tongue as the pretty grullo filly also started to wake.
"Momma?" Whisperfrost whispered, her one blind eye flicking around. Ravenleaf moved to her daughter and nuzzled her in greeting. "Good morning!" She nickered gently
"Twistwing has called for me and Alderflare to meet him in the mountains. I'm sorry I had to wake you both." She said as Alderflare stood up on his long, wobbly legs.
"What about me?" Whsiperfrost asked as she also rose to her hooves. "You, my dear, will stay with the Elders in the valley. I doubt this meeting with take all day, so we should be back by the afternoon. If not, don't worry, just stay with the Elders." Ravenleaf instructed before fanning her feathers and moving to the edge of the hill.
"Come." She said, before leaping off the hill and flying down to the valley towards the large tree in which the Elders lay beneath. Whisperfrost and Alderflare followed close behind, mumbling secrets to each other as they flew.
Once Whisperfrost was settled with the Elders, who always wake up earlier than the rest of the herd, Ravenleaf and Alderflare said their goodbyes and kicked off again.
Ravenleaf soared just above the trees, flying slow enough for Alderflare to keep up, but fast enough to make good time and not be late for the meeting.
Ravenleaf craned her neck over her shoulder to peer behind her flapping wings and the colt who was drafting in her wake. "The Northern mountain ranges are quite a distance away. Because you are not yet weaned, we cannot fly much higher than this. Tell me if we need to stop and rest your wings." She called behind her to the colt. He stiffly nodded in understanding, already feeling his one large wing start to ache his shoulders and back as he flapped along behind Ravenleaf.
About half an hour later, Alderflare needed a rest. Ravenleaf found a small creek cutting through a nearby forrest, so the two pegasi landed and took a drink from the creek. Alderflare stretched his overgrown wing and sighed in exhaustion.
"Are we almost there?" He asked, not wanting to admit his current pain and tiredness to his new nurse-mother. Ravenleaf smiled grimly and looked North, "Almost. We have maybe 25 more minutes of flying, the we have to scale the mountain ranges, which is easier said than done. Twistwing should be in a cave near the shortest mountain, called the Cave of Shadows, because not a lot of sunlight can reach the cave. The Cave of Shadows is usually where Twistwing holds meetings, so we should find him there." Ravenleaf told Alderflare who nodded again.
They duo lifted off and continued the long trek through Snow herd's open skies.
Just as the green feathered mare had said, about 25 minuets later, the large mountain range began to crest the horizon. Ravenleaf led Alderflare towards one of the smallest mountains in the group, which was difficult to find from the low altitude/tree level that they were at. But, eventually, Ravenleaf's hooves pounded into the cool stone surface of the Cave of Shadows with Alderflare's light hoofbeats not far behind her's. He exhaled deeply and allowed his bulky wing to drape over the floor while his normal side wing folded neatly on his back. Raveleaf blinked her eyes, trying to get used to the low-light luminosity in the cave.
"Twistwing?! It's me and Alderflare. You summoned us?" She called into the cave. Ravenleaf flicked her ears forward as her sentence reverberated off the cave walls, creating a massive echo that seemed to last forever.
Only when Ravenleaf's voice stopped echoing through the cave did Twistwing emerge from the shadows in all his powerful and mighty glory and speak,
"Greetings, Ravenleaf and Alderflare. I've been waiting for you." The over-stallion said, his voice sure and proud with a slight edge to it that made Alderflare's knees tremble.
Twistwing's body was difficult to see because of the lack of light, but just the presence of Twistwing in such close quarters made Ravenleaf's spine tingle.
His wings were opened wide, his neck was arched- showing off his neck and back muscles- his long tail streamed behind him as he walked, and his gray eyes were intense and stone cold.
Ravenleaf subtly swallowed, but straightened her posture and stared intently into Twistwing's intimidating eyes. The battle-mare greeted her over stallion with a slight bow and was pleased to see that Alderflare had done the same.
Twistwing exhaled, slightly pleased by the bows his subjects produced as they acknowledged him.
His warm breath coming out of his nostrils in one single puff, "We have much to talk about." He added, inviting Ravenleaf and the nervous colt to step deeper into the cave...
