Part 2: A Weanling Argument
The next day, Aquawind and Shadowlake were playing apple ball in the meadow, their wings flashing in the afternoon light.
“Try and catch THIS!” Squealed Aquawind, tossing the apple high into the air, it’s glossy red hide catching the light momentarily. Shadowlake leapt, using her silver and blue wings to gain some height, catching the apple’s stem between her teeth.
“Got it!” She cried triumphantly, her voice slightly muffled from the apple in her mouth. “Catch this!” She squeaked, tossing the apple at an angle.
“I got it, I got it!” Squealed Aquawind, her legs pumping rapidly to get to the apple before it hit the ground. Stretching out her neck, Aquawind opened her mouth to catch the apple. Before she could catch it however, something slammed into her side, sending her head over hoof in the grass. Tumbling a few feet in a flurry of wings and legs, she landed with an audible thump, a grimace on her face as she got up on wobbly legs.
“Aquawind!” Shrieked Shadowlake, racing over to her sister’s side. “Are you ok!?”
“Y…Yeah…I’m fine.” She said shaking the dust off of her aqua and black wings. “But who…” She stopped midsentence when she saw who stood before her, the apple dangling from his mouth. “Goldcliff…” She said with a growl. The buckskin weanling stood facing her, a triumphant smile on his blazed face. “That was MY catch!” Aquawind spat, rattling her feathers. Goldcliff spat out the apple, the red fruit rolling across the ground.
“I didn’t see your name on it.” He said, shrugging his midnight blue wings.
“How dare you…” Aquawind seethed, causing Shadowlake to inch away from the two, her eyes wide. Aquawind pranced forward, her wings spread wide. She threw her muzzle into his face, their noses barely a hair length apart. “You had to PUSH me out of the way to catch that apple! I’d say that it was my apple!”
Goldcliff snorted in amusement. “It wasn’t in your mouth. I’d say it was fair game.”
Aquawind squealed in anger, flapping her wings in fury. “You’re a feather brain!” She hissed.
Goldcliff snorted, looking away. “I could say the same to you.”
Aquawind stepped back, a look of pure fury on her face. “That. Was. My. APPLE!” She squealed.
“It was in MY mouth!” Goldcliff said with a snort.
“Guys, does it matter…” Shadowcliff said timidly.
“But I never asked you to play!” Hissed Aquawind. “And I bet you were to scared to ask us!” She growled angrily. “You were a coward!”
“I am not!” He growled stepping forward.
“You are too!” Aquawind whinnied, flaring her wings.
“Nuh uh!” He said with a stamp of his hoof.
“I bet if a grown Pegasus was here, you’d go running!” She demanded.
“I would NOT!” He squeaked, he then froze, seeing a larger shadow around him. With wide eyes, he looked behind him, seeing Aquawind’s older brother, Wintersky, looming over him.
“What’s going on here?” He asked, only the slightest hint of a growl in his voice.
“N…Nothing!” He stuttered, obviously intimidated by the older stallion. Shadowlake stood behind Wintersky, she had obviously gone to get him.
“I see…” Wintersky said flicking an ear. He leaned down to the colt’s height, his eyes shimmering dangerously. “We both know that’s not true…so why don’t you spread those wings of yours and fly away?”
Goldcliff nodded quickly, spreading his blue wings and taking flight, his wings beating as fast as he could make them. Aquawind smiled widely.
“Yes!” She squealed, “We sure showed him! Didn’t we…” She stopped midsentence when she noticed her brother was glaring at her.
“You’re in big trouble.” He said.
“What did I do!? He’s the one who pushed me!” She exclaimed.
“Even so,” Her brother replied, “You called him a coward, and you goaded him on.”
“I didn’t goad him!” She demanded, hurt that he’d think she wanted the fight to go on.
“Keeping on arguing and calling him names IS goading him on. Now come on.” He said, pushing his younger sister with a wing. Aquawind’s ears pinned when she spotted her parents grazing near the tree where they lived.
‘I’m going to be in big trouble…’ She thought in agitation.
