Chapter 9: Prison
After a few more days of hard flying, Skysun could see the Southern Jungle in the distance, the call of distant exotic birds reaching them, even from their distance away.
“Land!” Oakfire commanded sharply, leading the group down to the beach, circling the group twice before landing himself. “We’ll rest her for the night.” He explained, “And NO funny business!” He snapped, glaring at Skysun, who just rolled her eyes in response. Oakfire saw this however, and strode forward, causing Skysun to flinch. The blow never came, and Skysun looked up to see Leafcloud standing in front of her protectively, her nostrils flaring and her ears pinned back. Not a word was exchanged between them, but Oakfire eventually backed off, stalking over to the perimeter where he cast one last glare in Skysun’s direction before watching the land around them. With a final snort, Leafcloud turned to face Skysun, her eyes shining apologetically.
“I’m sorry about my brother.” She nickered, “Sometimes he can be a bit…brash…” She said, casting a slightly annoyed glance in Oakfire’s direction. “Sometimes I wonder if one of us was adopted…”
Skysun looked at her hooves, conflicting feelings about the mare before her wrestling in her mind, should she trust the mare? She couldn’t tell. “Thank you…” She murmured quietly.
Leafcloud looked slightly surprised, but she smiled, nodding, “You’re very welcome.” She nickered before trotting off to check on the other foals.
Skysun sighed, settling down for the night, falling into one of the first restful sleeps she had in days. Ever since she was forcefully taken from her home and sent on a journey to Jungle Herd.
“Get up!” Snapped Oakfire, his eyes showing no emotion. “Let’s go!”
“Oakfire!” Snapped Leafcloud, “Calm down, these are WEANLINGS, not full grown pegasai, give them a little time to get up and shake the sleep from their wings!”
Oakfire just snorted, ruffling his green wings in annoyance, “Fine.”
Skysun looked in astonishment, this was weird…she began to trust Leafcloud slightly.
After a while, the group took flight, heading straight to the jungle, and to their prison. Skysun watched Leafcloud, who looked extremely uncomfortable, her bright green wings flapping fiercely. In fact, all of the Jungle Herd steeds looked uncomfortable, looking around them in suspense, 'They're probably scared my herd will come and get us,' She thought smugly, 'Well just they wait until they see my herd descending from the clouds! A rain of fury!', but they didn't come. As they drew closer, she couldn’t help but feel apprehensive, hoping and praying her herd would getto them before they entered the Jungle, because the moment they did, Skysun knew they would be doomed. Dipping lower in the sky, the group glided toward the break in the tree line, and Skysun’s heart raced wildly in her chest, looking to the sky, hoping to see the faintest glimmer of golden, yellow, or red feathers that would signal the approach of her herd, but she saw nothing. Her hope crumbled as they slipped into the shadows of the trees, caused by the thick canopy above them.
‘This is my home now…’ Skysun thought, looking sorrowfully at the tree canopy, feeling suddenly trapped, a sudden thought crossed her racing mind, ‘No…my prison.’
