Part 2: A Flying Exercise
After flying for a while, the two fillies landed. Tired, they took a drink from the Tail River.
“Think we’re almost there?” Asked Breezeheart.
Skysun nodded, “My dad showed me the place the other day, and I thought it would be perfect for a flight exercise!” She said, ruffling her feathers excitedly. Breezeheart’s ears twitched, her dull red wings rattling slightly.
“I don’t know, Skysun…we’ve never been this far from the herd without an adult before. What if we get hurt?” She asked nervously.
“C’mon!” Skysun said with a roll of her eyes. “Who would get hurt doing what we’re going to do!” She said with a rattle of her feathers.
“We’re going to be dodging cacti…” Breezeheart pointed out. Skysun fell silent for a moment.
“W…Well,” She stuttered. “Just don’t hit into them! You’ll be fine!”
“Skysun, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea…what if someone finds us out here…alone…”
Skysun snorted. “We have peace with Mountain Herd, and there are no other herds around us. We’ll be FINE, Breezeheart!”
Breezeheart sighed and shook her head. “Why did I agree to come in the first place?” She asked partially to herself.
“Maybe because you’re not as much of a stickler to the rules as you’d like us to believe?” Skysun responded with a smirk.
“Yeah, right.” Breezeheart responded with a roll of her eyes. She spread her wings. “Let’s just hurry so we can get back before anyone notices we’re gone.” She stated, taking flight, Skysun following closely behind. After a short while of flying, the fillies came to a cluster of tall cacti, the pink and red flowers opening up to the dawn sun.
“We’re here!” Skysun said enthusiastically. Breezeheart just sighed.
“So what are we supposed to do again?” She asked her friend.
“Ok! So, we fly close to the ground, straight towards the cacti, and we have to fly through the patch without touching a cactus!” She said with a wide smile.
“Oh…” Breezeheart said, her eyes wide.
“Let’s go!” Skysun said, diving towards the ground, flying parallel to the ground when she thought she was close enough, Breezeheart following behind her. Skysun tilted her wings, passing between the first two cacti with ease. She dodged under a cactus arm, her ears barely missing the pointy spikes. She dodged a couple more cacti, but it was then that she realized, that this may not have been a good idea. Her eyes narrowed in concentration as she attempted to dodge the cacti, but it was no use. Her leg skimmed the arm of one cactus, and her wing slammed into another, throwing her into another, causing her back to explode in pain. She lay on the sand, attempting to catch her breath. After she was able to get her breath back, she got weakly to her legs, limping out of the patch.
“Sunsky!” Squealed Breezeheart, landing next to her friend. “Oh, goodness! You’re hurt!” She said, seeing the needles and scratches in her friend’s hide.
“This…uhh…may have been a bad idea…” Skysun said with a chuckle, grimacing in pain, her right wing dragging on the ground.
“We need to get you to Lotusroot!” Breezeheart said, prancing in place, her wings fluttering. "Let's go!" She said, taking flight and hovering above the ground.
“I can’t fly…” Skysun murmured. “I hurt my wing, remember? Speaking of, how aren't you injured?”
“Right…” Breezeheart said with a grimace "And...uhhh...I may have pulled up before I entered the patch."
"You...what!?"
"I couldn't do it!"
Skysun sighed in slight anger. “Even still...we’ll have to walk back.” Skysun said with a groan.
“M…Maybe I should fly back! I can get help!” Breezeheart said.
“And leave me, an injured Pegasus, alone!? No way…it’ll be best if we stick together.” Skysun exclaimed.
“You’re right…” Murmured Breezeheart, “But then…what are we going to do?” She asked.
“We’ll just have to walk along the river, we should be home before anyone gets TOO worried..”
“I guess…” Her friend responded. “I just hope…” And at that moment, the two fillies froze, for they heard the unmistakable sound of wingbeats, and not just of one Pegasus.
