(Hi @Riverglade ! I took a few artistic liberties with this story, but since most of it is a dream, it won’t matter. It was fun to right this! Hope you like it!)
The sky was dark, and rain poured down on the lone pegasus who was just going to sleep. The day before, this pegasus had been kicked out of their home.
Faces swam in front of the stallions eyes, the captured foals, his two overstallions, and his crush.
A twig snapped. “Mistfeather?” He called into darkness, only to find that it was just a squirrel.
Alone, in no herd’s land, the stallion, Sablestone, fell asleep.
The sun blazed brightly as Sablestone realized he was back in Canyon Herd. Foals played in the grass, ones he didn’t recognize.
He walked up to one of them, a little filly. “Hello!” He nickered. “What is your name?”
The filly turned around, gasped, and backed away. “It’s the Foalnapper!” She cried. “He captured Riverglade, now he is going to capture us too!”
The other foals bolted away from Sablestone. “Wait!” He cried. “Who are you? Why do you look so familiar?”
The filly turned and glared. “I am Firestream, the daughter of Mistfeather and Cometfeather, and I will not let you capture more foals!”
Sablestone reared in anger. He remembered Cometfeather. He knew that stallion well. A cruel, selfish stallion who had always wanted Mistfeather as his own.
“You don’t understand! I was following orders! I had to steal the foals!” Sablestone nickered. Firestream shook her head and ran off.
The dream changed. Sablestone was now back in Plains Herd. The sky was dark, and streams of blood littered the ground.
Hawkwing was there too, and blood was splattered on the stone upon which he sat. Dull-eyed pegasi sat around him.
“You ask how you can prove yourself to me, traitor?” The Overstallion bellowed. Sablestone nodded.
“Bring the captured pegasi, Cloudfire. Their lives end now.” The captain quickly obeyed, bring three pegasi out from the shadows.
“Riverglade, Lightbreeze... and Mistfeather.” Hawkwing nickered, looking at Sablestone. “Kill them, and you will be Sablefire, my loyal captain.”
Sablestone’s eyes grew wide as the captured pegasi were brought to him. Mistfeather wouldn’t even look at him, she was so furious. Sablestone lifted him hooves, prepared to give the death blow.
Mistfeather’s last words to him earlier in Canyon Herd swirled in his mind. “You betrayed your HERD. You got innocent weanlings captured by one of the cruelest overstallions in history. Nothing you could ever say or do will make that right. NOTHING."
Just as before, Sablestone’s heart broke into a million tiny pieces. He couldn’t kill Mistfeather. He just couldn’t. He lowered his hooves to the rocks.
“No.” Sablestone nickered. The tiny word seemed to make Hawkwing pause. No one had ever refused him before. “No, I won’t.”
Hawkwing look startled for a moment, but then quickly changed his expression to fury. “Very well then. I will do it myself, TRAITOR.” He flew over to the terrified weanlings and mare.
He raised his hooves, but as he sent them hurtling down, Sablestone blocked the blow with his own body. Mistfeather screamed as Sablestone fell to the ground.
“I hope-I hope this will make things right.” He groaned as he began to feel the life leave his body. “I love you.”
“No! No!” Mistfeather sobbed. “Don’t leave me!”
Sablestone woke up with a gasp. His heart was beating so loudly, he was afraid that someone would hear him.
He glanced around, trying to see through the mist. It was as he stood up that he saw the feather, covered in mist, that had been tucked into his nest. A pink and silver feather.
“Mistfeather?” He nickered in wonder, touching the feather. “Did you visit me last night?” Sablestone sighed, realizing how that was silly. “Probably some feather that I accidentally picked up yesterday.”
“I will make this right, Mistfeather, I promise.” Sablestone pledged, cupping the feather in his wing.
