Me: *Runs onto the stage* "HEY GUYS!! SO SORRY that the winners of the November Art Challenge is not out yet! I PROMISE, they'll be out soon! Hopefully tonight! But I wanted to get this challenge out to you guys so you can get started! Skysun, can you bring me the challenge envelope?"
Skysun: *Trots onto the stage, an envelope in her mouth as she trots over to me proudly, depositing the envelope in my outstretched hands*
Me: "OK! So, this will be a little DIFFERENT than my other challenges! Instead of drawing a picture, you will be writing a SHORT STORY!! YEAHHHHH!!!!"
Skysun: "A short story? Any writing prompts?"
Me: *Shakes my head* "Nope! For my FIRST writing challenge I want to let my contestants run WILD with their imagination! But...I do have a FEW rules!"
Skysun: *Rolls her eyes* "Rules? Oh goody..."
Me: *Raises an eyebrow* "First...you sounded like Scar from The Lion King, secondly, YES, there are rules! I need to have SOME guidelines they need to follow!"
Skysun: "Well? WHAT are the rules?"
Me: "FINE, FINE!! First, it HAS to be Guardian Herd related! I feel like having them in the same universe MAY make it easier to judge! Secondly, it SHOULD be at least 500 words, about the size of my story parts, I can't REALLY see for sure if your stories have 500 words or more unless I either copy and paste it onto Word, or I count ever individual word of the story, which I DON'T think I'm gonna do, so this I'm going to trust you followed this rule (Also, this rule isn't CONCRETE, it CAN be a BIT lower than 500 words. I just want to make sure you make a well rounded short story! If you want, it could even be LONGER than 500 words! This isn't set in stone)! XD Thirdly, NOTHING INNAPROPRIATE! Fourth, HAVE FUN!"
Skysun: "Wow...that's a LOT of rules!!"
Me: "HEY! It's ONLY 4 RULES!"
Skysun: "Still a lot of rules..."
Me: "HEY! They are IMPORTANT rules!"
Skysun: *Rolls her eyes* "Yeah right!" *Flicks her tail in my face and trots off the stage*
Me: *Narrows eyes in anger* "HEY! Come BACK here!" *Races off after her*
Rainshine: "Well...HAVE FUN YOU GUYS!!"
(For those of you who may not have read through all the dialogue, here are the rules!
1: It should be Guardian Herd related. *It CAN be Riders of the Realm related too!* (I feel it will be easier to judge the stories if they're from the same universe, but I may change this rule if most of the contestants want me to!)
2: Your story SHOULD be at LEAST 500 words! (This isn't entirely concrete, it COULD be less then 500 words if absolutely necessary. I just want to make sure you have a well rounded story!!)
3: NOTHING INNAPROPRIATE!! (Not that I think this would be a problem, but I just wanted to put it out there!)
4: HAVE FUN!!!)
5 DEADLINE IS THE 11th of JANUARY 2021 AT 11:59 PM CST!!

I just felt like it was a little too long for one comment, so I made a post about it :) Hope you like itttt!!!
I have FINALLY finished it! It took me SUCH a long time to finish this! WARNING: it is VERY long, hehe. I didn't mean for it to be so long, it just sort of... happened. ENJOY!
Frostwind trotted through the deep snow, his thickly feathered hooves making deep wells when he lifted them. He breathed heavily in the cold weather. He wrapped his periwinkle blue wings around his light silver body. He longed to return to his small cave on the south-west coat of Anok. He had been forced to leave it the day before because of an avalanche. He had only been able to escape it because he could fly.
He reached the cave, and gasped at what he saw. It had been completely demolished by the avalanche, nothing but large pieces of rock remained. Frostwind sighed, sorrow suddenly filling his heart. He had grown up in that cave, lived there his entire life. His foal hood memories were all in there, and now it’s gone. A lone tear dripped down his cheek, and he quickly brushed it away, ashamed that he would cry over a silly cave.
Frostwind took a deep, shaky breath, and turned around. He couldn’t stand to look at the remains of what was once his favorite place in the world. He glanced back at it one last time, then trotted away, setting off to search for a new cave, a new home.
He didn’t know how long he had been searching for, but it must have been a while, as night had crept upon him. His teeth chattered in cold night air, the wind whistled, breaking up what would have been utter silence. Snow fell down in flurries, swirling in the breeze, making it hard for Frostwind to see.
His breath showed up in puffs in the cold air, and he shivered. He decided to stop for the night, and found a large tree to shelter under. He made a shallow dent in the snow big enough to fit him, and he curled up inside it, wrapping his wings around his body for warmth. As Frostwind closed his eyes, memories of his foalhood swarmed his head, swirling around like the snowflakes around him. He pressed his eyes shut, trying to get rid of the images that plagued his mind.
It didn’t work.
“Mama!” Young Frostwind bleated, seeing his mother surrounded by Snow Herd stallions. “Stay back Frostwind,” His mother, Snowbell, whinnied, her ice blue eyes wide in terror. Her beautiful lilac feathers tipped in indigo rattled defiantly, and her white body shimmered in the sunlight. Frostwind was just a few days old when this happened. He shook in terror, confused by what was happening around him.
A tall, stocky, silver buckskin mare trotted over to Snowbell, and the stallions departed, allowing her to approach Frostwind’s beautiful mother. “Snowbell,” The mare greeted, her long black mane flowing in locks down her neck. “Wintercloud,” Snowbell said, her voice as icy as the terrain she calls home.
Wintercloud rattled her silver-blue feathers, and trotted closer to Snowbell, lifting her black tipped legs carefully and gracefully. “I remember you were very good friends with my mate, Northwing, before he became over-stallion, correct?” She trilled, her voice as smooth as a riverstone, but cold as ice.
Snowbell nodded stiffly, her feathers rattling.
Wintercloud walked smoothly and confidently around Snowbell, swishing her silky black tail. “And, now here we are, nearly nine months later, and you have given birth to a colt, who looks very similar to Northwing,” She nickered. She glided right up to Snowbell’s ear. “And yet you have no mate,” She whispered hauntingly.
Snowbell shivered. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” She insisted, edging away from the lead mare who had become her best friend’s mate.
Just then, the stallion in question flew down, seeing the commotion from the sky. His cobalt blue feathers fluttering down to the ground like raindrops. “What is happening here?” Northwing whinnied to his mate, and former best friend. He landed on the snow covered ground and flared his large wings. He looked at the circle of steeds, confused. His eyes landed on the small, three day old colt a winglength away from the circle. He gasped. The colt was the spitting image of the overstallion, down to his curly white tail and the connected star and stripe on his forehead. The only difference was that the colt’s wings were a periwinkle blue, an almost exact combination of Northwing’s cobalt blue feathers and Snowbell’s lilac feathers.
Northwing narrowed his eyes at the colt. “Who’s colt is that?” He snapped, glaring at Frostwind. The three day old colt trembled, terrified.
Snowbell stepped towards her former best friend, her over-stallion. She raised her head proudly. “Mine,” She said fearlessly.
Northwing pinned his ears. “You don’t have a mate,” He sputtered, confused.
Snowbell’s white ears pricked. “I know what,” She whispered. “May I speak with you? Alone?”
Northwing nodded, and they trotted into the trees.
And that’s where the memory ended. Frostwind’s mother, Snowbell, had been banished from Snow Herd and raised him in the cave that had just been destroyed. SHe had been killed by an ice tiger a few weeks before Frostwing was going to be weaned, forcing him to fend for himself from a very young age.
Frostwind shivered in the cold, and burrowed deeper into his wings. He had checked around earlier before he fell asleep, and had seen absolutely no sign of an ice tiger, so he hoped one wouldn’t come and eat him while he slept. After a while, he fell into a restless sleep.
The sound of hoofbeats and voices awoke him. His head snapped up, fully awake within seconds. “Hey, you!” A stallion called to him. “What do you think you’re doing here, trespasser!”
Frostwind scrambled to his hooves. “I didn’t know I was trespassing,” He whinnied, his deep voice startling the stallion. “I’ll leave.”
The buttermilk buckskin stallion grinned. “I don’t think you will,” He snarled, rattling his silver feathers. “You will come with us,” He whistled, and more stallions cantered over to him. “Call Northwing,” The stallion told the others. “He can deal with the trespasser.”
`Northwing? Frostwind thought. Oh, no. I trespassed onto Snow Herd’s territory!
One of the stallions called for Northwing. The buttermilk buckskin stallion snarled. “I’m Stonefire, top captain in Snow Herd’s army,” He said. “And you, trespasser, WILL come with us.” He lunged towards Frostwind, baring his teeth.
Frostwind squealed and darted out of the way. Stonefire narrowed his eyes and bared his teeth. “Get him!” He ordered his stallions. They charged towards Frostwind, surrounding him. Frostwind reared, and flared his large periwinkle blue wings. The stallions backed up, surprised. They lunged forwards again, surrounding him and more determined.
A dapple gray stallion whirled around and struck Frostwind’s chest with his sharpened hooves, slicing open the skin. Frostwind squealed in agony and charged the dapple gray, baring his teeth. Frostwind headbutted the dapple gray in the chest, hard, and threw him off of his hooves.
The other stallions, including Stonefire, nickered at Frostwind, laughing at him. “Get him,” Stonefire ordered. Frostwind reared, striking his hooves in the air. He took notice that the warriors’ hooves were sharp and deadly, while his were dull and overgrown.
The stallions rushed forward again, grabbing to his wings and forcing him back to the ground. Frostwing thrashed, pulling his periwinkle blue wings out of their grasp. He whirled around and kicked one of the stallions in the ribs, knocking him to the ground. Frostwind was just about to crush the stallion’s skull when the trumpet of an over-stallion disrupted them.
A light silver stallion with cobalt blue feathers flew overhead, landing in front of them. “What is happening here?” He whinnied to his top captain. Then he saw Frostwind, and gasped.
Stonefire looked at Northwing. “This stallion trespassed, and then attacked us.”
Liars! Frostwind thought. Typical pegasi, always twisting the truth around to benefit themselves.
Northwing looked at the younger stallion who looked so much like him. He narrowed his eyes. “Break his wings.” He told Stonefire.
Stonefire nodded and lunged forward. Frostwind pranced away, nervous. His wings were pretty much his only means of survival when living alone. He wouldn’t last a day not being able to fly. His feathered hooves danced on the snow, ready to run away as soon as needed.
The stallions rushed forward and grabbed Frostwind’s wings, not giving him a chance to escape. Stonefire lashed out and kicked his front left leg. Frostwind groaned in pain, but remained mildly subdued, seeing there was no way to escape now.
Northwing trotted up to Frostwind, his eyes narrowed. Frostwind was shocked this stallion looked so similar to himself. He raised his head, his eyes meeting the over-stallion’s eyes. Northwing reared up, flaring his large cobalt blue wings to help him balance. He brought his hooves down just as the other stallions moved away so they didn’t get hit.
Frostwind duck to the side, barely escaping the stallion’s hooves. Northwing’s sharpened hoof managed to hit the bones at the very end of Frostwind’s left wing, breaking the flight bones. Frostwind wanted to scream as bolts of white hot pain shot from his wing throughout his entire body. He clamped his mouth shut and pranced away from the stallion.
Northwing snarled and charged Frostwind. He reared up and was about to give him the deathblow, but Frostwind was faster.
He met Northwing halfway, flaring his periwinkle blue wings. Frostwind hit Northwing’s chest with his large hooves, wishing once again that he had sharpened them. He hoped the blunt force of them would hurt Northwing enough. Northwing staggered back a few steps, but surged back forwards again.
Frostwind reared up, and bit the crest of Northwing’s neck, making him squeal in pain. He tossed the overstallion onto his side, crushing his cobalt blue wing. The patrol of stallions stared in confusion. Northwing had given them orders a few minutes ago not to interfere, thinking he could beat Frostwind. They awaited for new orders, but none came.
Frostwind reared up, flaring his wings for balance. Stonefire knew what was coming. He had seen it in many battles. “Fly straight and find your rest,” He whispered. Frostwind slammed his hooves back down onto Northwing, crushing his skull and killing him instantly.
Frostwind cringed, realizing what he had just done. I just killed an overstallion, He marveled. What is wrong with me!??! What was I thinking?
Stonefire and his patrol stared at Frostwind in wonderment. “What is your name?” Stonefire asked, his face void of any expression.
Frostwind balked. His eyes widened, scared of what the stallion might do to him. “F-Frostwind,” He said hesitantly. He stepped away from the body of the dead overstallion, slightly freaked out by it.
Stonefire then did a surprising thing. He kneeled down on his front knees, surrendering to Frostwind. “Frostwing,” He said.
Frostwind rocked back on his haunches, confused. “W-what?”
Stonefire looked up at him. “You killed our overstallion, so you are now our new overstallion.”
“I-I can’t be overstallion, I’ve never been in a herd.” Frostwind whinnied.
Stonefire stood up. “It is the custom. You don’t have to accept it if you want to live alone for the rest of your life. Is that what you want?”
Frostwind reconsidered. He had begun to feel something missing a few months back, and an urge had grown inside him. He had begun to yearn for a family of his own, a mate. He realized that he didn't want to live alone anymore. “I don’t want to live alone anymore,” He told Stonefire.
“Then follow me,” Stonefire said. He turned around and walked in the direction of Snow Herd.
Frostwind followed, slightly in shock. He looked up at the night sky, and saw the lights of the ancestors flying over them. Ancestors help me, he thought to himself, not sure what would happen when they reached Snow Herd.
They walked for about a half hour, with Stonefire asking Frostwind questions and telling him about the herd. When they reached Snow Herd, they stopped walking and Stonefire called the herd. They stood on a cliff, overlooking a large, snow covered valley where Snow Herd was.
Pegasi swarmed to the valley, and stared at Frostwind in confusion. Where was their overstallion? They rattled their feathers, uneasy by the strange stallion.
Stonefire raised his head and stomped his hoof. He snapped his wings out, the noise catching the Snow Herd steeds’ attention. “SNow Herd,” He whinnied. “Northwing battled this stallion just this night, and lost.” He gestured to Frostwind. The herd gasped. “This is Frostwing, your new overstallion.”
The herd protested in outrage.
He’s an outcast!
He doesn’t belong here.
Does he even know how to fight?
He must, if he killed Northwing.
A white mare with light pink feathers trotted forward, her ears pinned. “You killed your own father?” She asked Frostwing.
Frostwing balked. What was she talking about? “M-My father?”
Whispers erupted between the steeds in the valley. This was the illegitimate son of Northwing!
The mare scoffed. “Yes, your father. There was a rumor that Northwing sired a foal with his former best friend, SNowbell, before he became overstallion.”
“Silence!” Stonefire scolded her, flaring his silver wings. He turned his attention back to the herd. “Frostwing will meet with the captains now.”
The captains flew up to them, and they walked to a patch of trees a bit away from the herd, to discuss.
After the meeting, the medicine mare treated Frostwing’s wounds from the fight with Northwing. A few hours after that, he stood by himself, having finished everything that was needed to do. Can I really do this? He thought to himself.
Just then, the white mare with light pink feathers trotted up to him. “I’m Lightflower,” SHe introduced herself. Up close, Frostwing realized she was not fully white. She was mainly white, but had a small patch of silver over her ears, and on her back. Her eyes were a stunning pale blue, and her mane and tail were a silky white, with an almost pearlescent sheen to them.
She didn’t wait for him to introduce himself. “So you really didn’t know that Northwing was your father?” SHe asked him, narrowing her eyes at him, seeing him staring at her.
Frostwing stared at her. “No, I didn’t.” He said.
Lightflower looked at him. “What was it like, living alone?” SHe asked him.
He pricked his ears. He told her about the cave, and his mother. Frostwing told her about teaching himself how to fight.
Lightflower gasped. “You taught yourself everything we learn in flight school and army training?” She asked, astounded.
Frostwing nodded.
“Wow,” She breathed.
They talked until late evening, when Lightflower had to go back to her family. Frostwing stared after her, confused. It seemed that Lightflower liked him, and he liked her. Maybe it wouldn’t be so hard being overstallion after all.
A few years later…
Frostwing stood with Lightflower, now Lightcloud. They watched their newborn son, Iceriver, play with the other foals. The two had grown closer since Frostwing had arrived in Snow Herd, and they had become mates.
After getting used to being in a herd, Frostwing began to take his role of overstallion very seriously, and cared deeply for Snow Herd. He had proved himself to be a very capable and protective overstallion, taking action as soon as possible if something goes wrong, and takes every measure possible to protect the herd.
Lightcloud was just as a good lead mare, and the herd loved the pair for it. THey had long gotten past their hostility towards Frostwing, and had accepted him.
Lightcloud sighed and leaned against Frostwing, watching their dark silver colt rattle his pale blue feathers, trying to tag one of his friends. Iceriver’s large white star glinted off sunlight as he looked up and saw his parents. He waved a wing at them, then narrowed his blue eyes and swished his white ringlet tail, and chased after his friends.
Frostwing wrapped a wing around Lightcloud, and remembered everything that had happened to get him to this moment. The cave collapsing, fighting Northwing, becoming overstallion. With gentle understanding, he realized that he had a purpose. To lead a herd, and protect.
He looked at his family, and the herd. He nuzzled Lightflower, and silently vowed to protect his family and Snow Herd with his life. And, when the time came, he would leave Snow Herd in the charge of the best replacement possible. For now, he will love and protect his herd and family with everything he had.
I would put all the indents in... but it's really long and there are too many paragraphs. sorry XD sorry it's so long!
I would love to join in! But I'm not entirely sure what to write.... Are there any guidelines whatsoever? And what will you be judging on? :)
This is sooooo goood!!
So I thought about the Desert Herd steeds who tried to make a break for the jet streams but whom Nightwing killed with his silver starfire. So my short story is about a young mare who tried to make a break for it with her mate. Enjoy!
Info:
Whirlwind~ young light buckskin mare with pale blue feathers edged in midnight blue, brown mane and tail, wide blaze
Goldriver~ young bright palomino stallion with gold feathers, flaxen mane and tail, two front white socks
Redflower~ young red mare with white feathers, black mane and tail, tiny black spots all over body
Dustfeather~ brave palomino pinto stallion with rust-red feathers, mixed white and gold mane and tail, four white socks
Beyond
by Iceberry
Whirlwind arched her neck nervously, eyeing Nightwing and Petalcloud across the flatlands. She lowered her muzzle to the water and closed her eyes. Her heart beat like a frightened rabbit’s against her chest. Soon… she thought. So soon! Only a couple more minutes….
Ripples splashed against her muzzle as someone touched the water and her eyes flew open, panicking. But a warm wing across her back calmed her down. “Shh…. It’s just me.”
Whirlwind closed her eyes and leaned against him. “Goldriver,” she whispered. “I’m so scared.”
Goldriver nuzzled her neck. “It’s okay. Once we get to the jet streams we can escape and start our own herd somewhere else. West even of the Anok we know.”
“What if we don’t make it?” asked Whirlwind, shaking.
Someone nudged her left side and she tensed up again, relaxing when her friend Redflower whispered excitedly, “Ready?”
Whirlwind began to hyperventilate, Golriver trying to calm her by stroking her neck. Finally she choked out, “Now?”
Redflower nodded. “Now. Dustfeather says to go as soon as he gives the signal.”
Whirlwind stepped away from Goldriver and flared her wings. A harsh neigh cut across the still meadow and Whirlwind leaped into the air, darting up toward the jet streams far above. Below her, the other Desert Herd mares and stallions straggled into the air.
Too late, Whirlwind realized the neigh had been Nightwing’s, calling Stormtail to him. It hadn’t been Dustfeather at all.
They were up in the sky, and then Nightwing was among them, breathing silver starfire in all directions. Whirlwind saw a blast catch the brave stallion Dustfeather in the chest, the starfire spreading to his mane and catching his feathers on fire. He screeched, a high, piercing sound, and fell toward the ground.
Whirlwind shot upward, trying to block out the noises of dying pegasi. She glanced back and saw Goldriver just behind her, Redflower below him.
Nightwing swooped past Goldriver and incinerated Redflower. Whirlwind almost fell out of the sky, but Goldriver pushed her up. “Go, go, go!”
Whirlwind beat her wings harder. Nightwing roared at her, but Goldriver flashed in front of her, taking the starfire in his side and falling.
“NO!” Whirlwind screamed, her wings stalling as she stared with terror into the cold silver eyes of Nightwing. He kept his stream of starfire going and blasted it into her face. Screaming with pain and terror, she threw her wings over her head and fell.
Whirlwind’s eyes popped open and she screamed into the pitch darkness that surrounded her. It echoed like she was in a canyon and she stopped, eyes wide open, panting, the chilly air pressing against her. She stumbled to her feet, reaching her wings out into the void. The ground under her felt cold, hard, and slick, like obsidian. She was so terrified she felt she couldn’t get more scared or she’d die.
But… wasn’t she dead? Hadn’t Nightwing killed her? But this wasn’t the golden meadow…. And Goldriver!
Devastated, Whirlwind crumpled to the ground, sobbing into her feathers, feeling the tangible cold darkness seeping into her, creeping into her blood, chilling her from the inside out. Then a whisper came through the darkness.
“Who’s there? Are you okay?”
Whirlwind stopped crying, her breath catching. She dumbly asked the same question. “Who’s there?”
A small chuckle sounded. “My name is Goldriver. Who are you?”
“Goldriver?” Whirlwind struggled upright. “It’s me, Whirlwind! Where are you?”
“By the Ancestors! Whirlwind! Walk toward my voice.”
Whirlwind stumbled in the direction of Goldriver’s voice, finally crashing right into him. “Goldriver! What’s going on?”
Goldriver wrapped his wings around her and sank to the ground, pulling Whirlwind with him. “I don’t know, and I’m as terrified as you are, but at least we have each other. I think it may be because Nightwing killed us with the same burst of starfire.”
They stayed there a long time, quiet in the dark void — Whirlwind didn’t know how long it was. It could’ve been five years or five days. There was no time in this horrible, cold, dark place.
She looked up into Goldriver’s warm amber eyes. They were big and bright, but she could see the terror deep down.
“Wait,” she whispered. “I can see your face.” They rose awkwardly, their wings still around each other, staring at each other. “It’s getting lighter!”
Goldriver looked down and flared his wings in alarm. “The floor’s shattering!”
Whirlwind looked down just as the floor fell away and she fluttered her wings to stay in the air, hovering next to Goldriver. Below was the Interior, with celebrating pegasi scattered across the plain. Shining pegasi surrounded Goldriver and Whirlwind, slightly transparent, and Whirlwind noticed that she and Goldriver were also semi-transparent. Ancestors! We’re Ancestors!
A pale gray mare saw their bewildered expressions and flew over, a bay stallion next to her, smiling. The mare said something about “the Beyond” that Whirlwind didn’t quite catch, but Goldriver seemed to understand, and when the two pegasi flew away, Goldriver explained when he saw her still-puzzled face.
“Anyone who was killed by Nightwing’s silver starfire was sent to that place we were — the Beyond. But Star defeated Nightwing, so we’re free!”
Whirlwind smiled ecstatically and knew what to do. She nuzzled Goldriver, closed her eyes, and opened them in the golden meadow, Goldriver right beside her.
Riverdew’s Secret
By Morningmist
Riverdew looked at the night sky, knowing that in a moon’s time, the hundred year star would show itself again. Nearly a hundred years had passed after Star had been born, and it was almost time for the new black foal to be born.
Riverdew didn’t care about the new black foal. She was worried about Star’s birthday itself.
“Oh look! There she is!” Cometflame hissed, shoving Riverdew. “The stupid mare who believes that Star was a Snow Herd pegasus!”
Riverdew was fed up with being bullied by Cometflame and his friends. “But Star was of Snow Herd decent! His grandfather was a Snow Herd pegasus!”
Cometflame snorted. “Next thing I know, you are going to tell me that Lightfeather was a Mountain Herd pegasus becuase her brother Frostfire was!”
Riverdew hung her head, embarrassed. While she wanted to change her beliefs because everyone thought they were wired, deep inside, she knew that she didn’t want to give in yet.
“Go home idiot!” Cometflame reared.
Riverdew walked back to her home, a small cave she shared with her parents, without looking back.
~
Riverdew entered the cave, hiding her sadness, something she had learned to do many moons ago.
“I have good news!” Riverdew’s mother, Petalflame, nickered.
“What?” Riverdew asked a little reluctantly. Her mom’s idea of good news was much different then hers. She shuddered, remembering once when her mother had organized a day for her and Cometflame to hang out.
“A messenger told me that your Aunt Lilypetal and your cousin Nightray are coming to visit!” Petalflame exclaimed.
Riverdew squealed in excitement. Nightray was her only friend in the whole wide world! He lived far away, in the Interior of Anok, and he didn’t get to visit often.
A pang of nervousness struck her heart. She hadn’t told Nightray about her beliefs. What if he found out? Would she lose her only friend?
~
Nightray flew with his mother, Lilypetal, heading towards Crabwing’s Bay, where Riverdew and her family lived.
He was so excited to see Riverdew again. She wasn’t his only friend, but by far the closest.
Nightray looked up into the sky, pleased to see the Hundred Year Star shinning in the sky. It was his favorite time of the year, and he got to spend it with his best friend!
~
After a few days of traveling, Nightray and Lilypetal arrived in Crabwing’s Bay.
“We’re here!” Lilypetal called in her squeaky voice.
Nightray swiveled his ears, listening for what came next. A squeal of excitement, the thumping of hooves, and the pounding of wings.
A moment later, Riverdew stepped out of the cave, her face flushed.
“Hi Nightray.” Her voice quivered.
“Hi Riverdew!” Nightray responded happily, but then he frowned. “Is something wrong?”
Riverdew was shedding feathers like crazy, and the tips of her wings were wet like she has been wiping away tears. She nodded quickly, a slight bit of panic flashing in her eyes.
“Why don’t we go on a walk?” Riverdew suggested.
Internally, Nightray shrugged. Riverdew would tell him when she was ready.
~
Riverdew’s cheeks felt white hot as she led Nightray away from everyone else. She was acting so silly. Nightray must think that she liked him or something.
But how can I hide it from him? Cometflame is bound to tell him sooner or later!
Riverdew looked into the distance, nearly gasping in shock as she saw Cometflame flying over the sea, but a closer look revealed that it was just a feather floating in the breeze.
I must be going insane!
Riverdew trembled, and Nightray looked over at her, worried.
“Are you sure that you are okay?” Nightray asked again.
No, no I am not okay. What should I do? Either way, I may lose my only friend. If I tell him, he will hate me like all the others. If I hide it, he will lose trust in me and also hate me.
After a moments pause, Riverdew had made her decision. “There is something I have to tell you.” She nickered, to Nightray, feeling the burden of the secret come off her shoulders.
~
Nightray sat back on his haunches, shocked. “This is what you were hiding from me?”
Riverdew bit her lip. “Yes.” She nickered. “Do you hate me now?”
“Hate you?” Nightray snorted. “Why would I hate you?”
“Because you think I’m weird.” Riverdew scuffed dirt with her hooves.
“I don’t think your weird.” Nightray nickered, his eyes soft. “Your my friend, and you beliefs don’t change that.”
Riverdew sighed, relieved, happy that she still had her friend. Nightray smiled back.
The two friends watched the birds soar over the ocean, finally at peace.
Regrets
Frostfire looked up, the sky was bright this morning. Not a day had passed in the year since they had left Star's free herd that he didn't regret betraying Star and leaving with his family.
"Frostfire, love." Larksong called softly, her voice gentle.
"What?" Frostfire asked, snapping back to reality.
"Come meet your daughter." Larksong called.
Frostfire trotted over to his mate. He looked at the newborn filly. "S-she's perfect." He whispered.
"What will we name her?" Larksong asked, nuzzling her mate.
"Starsong." Frostfire said quickly.
Larksong smiled. "That the perfect name for her."
Starsong was a white filly with dark blue feathers tipped in white. She bleated softly.
Frostfire looked away, tears in his eyes, he walked over to Starfrost. "Have you met your little sister yet?" He asked his son.
Starfrost shook his head. "Not yet Papa." He said softly. "What if she doesn't like me?"
Frostfire remembered asking his mother, Petalcloud, that same question about the other foals in their herd.
"What if they don't like me Mama?" Young Frostfire whinnied.
"They will, I PROMISE." Petalcloud said, a smile on her face. "Go introduce yourself to them. I'll be right here." She encouraged her son.
Frostfire walked toward the other foals. "Hi."
The other foals turnes and swished their tails in his face as they walked away.
Frostfire turned to walk back to his mother but she wasn't there. He searched the sky and land until he saw her. Standing with his father Icewing. His mother had left him alone.
"She's your sister. Of course she'll like you," Frostfire told his son. "I promise I'll wait right here for you if you need me."
Starfrost walked over to his sister. "Hi I'm Starfrost. Your big brother," he said softly.
Starsong whinnied in joy and hugged her big brother.
Frostfire walked away, knowing that everyone but him had peace. His demons were finaly catching up to him. "I wish I hadn't betrayed Star. I wish we had stayed in the peace of his freed herd." He thought. After a hard disision he flew to Star's herd. He landed and bowed before Star. "Starwing, please forgive me."
Star looked down at the captain in shock. "Of course I forgive you. I always have. Forgiveness was always within your reach. You just had to reach out and take it. Go back to your family in peace." Star exchanged breath with the stallion.
Frostfire's eyes were wide. "Thank you Starwing." He flew home and smiled as he watched his family, their own little herd. He knew that his regrets would always haunt him. But Star had always offered forgiveness, and now that he had accepted it, he knew that forgiveness had ALWAYS been within his reach.
The end
SOMETHING
By Meadowleaf
Stormfrost stood on a small hill, her Aqua blue wings shimmering in the morning light. Her color attracted many eyes, most of which were not welcomed. The glossy blue roan coat and aqua wings stood out among the chestnuts and buckskins of desert herd. Her coat was flecked with small brown and white spots. She had a wide blaze down her face and her mane was black as midnight. Her bright amber eyes darted from Pegasi to Pegasi. Stormfrost’s parents had died in a wildfire a few days after she was weaned. She remembered it vividly even though it had been many moons sence her weaning. the night after their passing, she had seen them flying with the Anseaters , her Mamas golden wings and her fathers dusty red. She walked over to the river and took a long drink, trying not to remember. while she was drinking, one of the colts, Sandfeather, pushed her in. “You should have seen your face.” He nickered. Sandfeather spread his wings at crooked angles and widened his eyes. Whenhe couldn’t hold the posture any longer, he fell to the ground laughing. Stormfrost struggled out of the river, her eyes like fire. She walked over to Sandfeather and snorted, blowing water out of her nostrils. Sandfeather stoped laughing. He looked up into Stormfrost‘s face. “Uh, hi Stormfrost.” Sandfeather smiled shakily. But before she could say anything back, he got up and ran. Stormfrost knew she was faster than Sandfeather but she didn’t run after him. She was confidant he wouldn’t push her into the river again. She trotted over to the yearling fillies. Stormfrost was make a friend. “Hello?” She nickered. The others kept playing, ignoring her. She tried again. “HELLO!” Still no response. Stormfrost walked away downcast. She was the youngest filly in desert herd. Born half a moon late. She set off to amuse herself. She saw Sandfeather taking a drink in the river. Stormfrost took off. Amazingly, her wings were silent as she snuck up on him. at exactly the right moment she crashed into him, sending them both rolling into the river. ”Ha, got you!” Stormfrost nickered. Sandfeather splashed her back.”Nope, I got YOU!” He exlaimed, a funny smile on his face. Stormfrost nickered and realized she had found a friend.

Just Remember By Stormsun Crystalflare looked up at Nightwing, grief in her eyes. A tremor ran through her body. She flapped her scarlet edged dark blue wings and glanced at the Ice Warriors, who were eyeing the captured pegasi.
Crystalflare sighed softly. One of the Ice Warriors, Moonstar, was her brother, and she looked at him with sad eyes. She gritted her teeth and inhaled softly. Crystalflare looked away from him and at Morningleaf and her friends. They were planning something, she knew. Crystalflare pricked her ears, trying to listen, but she was too far away. Crystalflare wished she had friends... even just someone to talk too... but no. All she had was Moonstar, who was following the orders of Nightwing, and for all she knew, if he said even a speck of a nice word to her, one of them would be punished. Then, Crystalflare heard a loud scream, coming from Hazelwind, as Morningleaf fell towards the large river, her wings angled slightly. Morningleaf’s long flaxen mane fluttered, and then was soaked as Morningleaf hit the water with a loud splash. Hazelwind, Dewberry, Brackentail, and Bumblewind dove after her. Nightwing roared for his Ice Warriors, and immediately six stallions rattled their wings and followed Mornigleaf’s friends. One of the stallions was Moonstar. Crystalflare watched in horror as he hurtled towards land at breakneck speed, and dove straight into the river. His head struck against a large rock, and he sank, his white mane waving in the water. “Moonstar!” she whinnied softly. She waited for him to resurface. Her mind swirled and she felt dizzy. He never reappeared, only a bent golden feather that floated in the water, glimmering in the sun. Crystalflare’s heart shattered and she moaned. She cried silently. “Moonstar...where are you?” She waited. Her ears drooped, and her wings felt heavy, like she’d fall out of the sky any second. “Moonstar.” She cried softly. Nightwing called his Herd to land, and they descended, landing by the river. Crystalflare angled her wings, following Nightwing and the others, and landed on the hard ground, almost falling over. Her heart pounded and she groaned. She wiped her cheek with her wing and looked at Nightwing, who was scanning the Herd. He picked two stallions to guard the river. Crystalflare moaned and covered her muzzle with her wing, watching her brother’s golden feather float in the water. The two stallions scanned the river, waiting to see if any pegasus appeared. Crystalflare sobbed into her wing. Oh, Moonstar. Why did you obey Nightwing? You should’ve just... let the other stallions try to find Morningleaf. Why does Nightwing need her, anyway? I don’t understand... I wish you were here. Crystalflare looked up. She heard a voice. But the other steeds didn’t seem to hear it... which was strange. Then, all of a sudden, a light grey stallion with bright golden wings appeared in front of her, his long white mane blowing back. “Moonstar?” Crystalflare stared at her brother in shock. His transparent body shone. “It’s me... Crystalflare.” Moonstar lowered her muzzle next to hers. Crystalflare sobbed, “What’s... what’s happening? Are you... dead?” Her heart squeezed. Moonstar sighed, and ruffled his beautiful feathers. “Yes. But... you must stay safe. You deserve a real life, alright?” He looked at her, his light blue eyes shining with love for his sister. “How do I stay safe?” Crystalflare whispered. “Nightwing...” Moonstar darkened, “Just... don’t...” He shook his head and wrapped his golden wings around her. Crystalflare wept. “Moonstar... don’t leave me... with him. I’m scared... that Nightwing... that he will never be defeated.” She buried her muzzle in his mane. Moonstar stepped back, and brushed her cheek with his wing. “Just remember, whatever you do, wherever you are, wherever you go, I will always be with you.” He smiled softly, and vanished. Crystalflare felt a few tears slide down her cheek. She bowed her head and squeezed her eyes shut.
