Chapter 1: Princesses Like to Give MakeOvers
Taffeta, Taffeta Ryker. That’s me, and for the longest time, it was the exact opposite of who I wanted to be. It’s difficult being princess, but it gets easier. Did I say princess? Sorry, sorry. I meant crowned princess. Daddy is the king, I will someday be queen. Here in Aspen, the Kingdom of Clouds. It’s a difficult life, but our most trusted guard, Rayne Amiar, does a fantastic job, but she must be shy or something, because she doesn’t talk about herself, only me, like I’m the most important person in the world. And I don’t like it. Being the most important person I mean. I quite enjoy Rayne’s company, and she’s really pretty. I promise I try not to be a priss, and I keep that promise to people. I’m honest, kind, sweet, and generous… but not that modest I guess. I’m excited about what the day has in store for me, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to do it with…
“Taffeta!” I scrabbled at my pretty black and white notebook I got for my fifteenth birthday as Rayne stepped through the door and gingerly closed it behind her. Her shiny chocolate colored hair had been shaved on the side in a sad attempt at an undercut.
I screamed.
“Guns n’ Roses!” She yelped.
That was true. She said the randomest things sometimes, but it was funny. Her haircut was not though. “What did you do to your beautiful hair! You look like a hobo!” I shrieked.
She gave me an evil grin.
I grabbed her arm and dragged her to my bathroom. “Woah! What are you doing!”
“I’m saving you! You look like you had a fight with a tiger, and the tiger won!” I thrust her into a chair I had in my bathroom, and placed her in front of a mirror. “This is not acceptable!”
Rayne kept laughing and thrusting my arms away from her head. “Stop moving! Or I’ll cut you with this razor!”
She still was laughing, but she kept her arms down on her lap. “Have you done this before?” She asked, as I gingerly fixed her undercut, and shaved feathers into her scalp.
“Nope! But you're a mess, in desperate need of fixing.”
I gingerly put down the razor, and grabbed the scissors from nearby. Rayne glanced at me in the mirror the way she usually did with her one eye. She wore a rose eyepatch over the other one, but I wasn’t sure why. I shrugged and continued snipping away at her hair until it was a simple bob.
I picked up the razor and shaved the back of her head and her other side, adding feathers into her scalp. Left the top of her head uncut, and I finally grabbed my curler, and started curling the top of her head.
I stepped away from Rayne, and let her look at herself in the mirror. She admired herself in the mirror cautiously in the mirror, her smile wearing away. She gently felt the top of her head, where her golden streaks had seemed to move and edge towards the front of her hair, gold seemed to embark in the feathers too, but I ignored it.
“So?” I asked, feeling nervous that she hated it.
Rayne turned towards me. “I love it! I think that the barber in the shopping district has been scamming me.” She shook her head lightly. “Could you do this more often?” She asked, pointing at her hair.
I nodded. “Only if you promise me that you won’t come to my door looking like an absolute mess anymore.” I grinned at her.
Rayne nodded. “I promise.” she said, placing a hand over her heart. “Now it’s your turn.” she smiled evilly. “But no cutting.” She promised looking at my concerned face.
She grabbed a brush from the counter and two hair ties. She was the type of person to give you a hard time and tough love, but she was no fool for pain. She grabbed my hair gently, but she started to brush it sternly as if it were a rat’s nest. I flinched several times in pain, but she kept going. My light brown hair was soon up in two ponytails. The black and white tips had become more sharper as she gently curled it to make it more wavy.
I beamed like the sun. “Thanks a bunch, Rayne!”
She nodded and looked at my outfit, which consisted of a black overall skirt, with a striped black and white undershirt. Thigh high white socks complimented the outfit, and I wore black platforms, and a black beret.
Rayne turned to leave me. “You have an audience with your father.” she said grimly. “And I’m afraid it’s top priority.”
I gave her a sad face. What had happened to the fun we were just having? “Yeah, but why?”
Rayne casted a look at the gates, her new hair glowing faintly. I didn’t ask why. She sighed. “I think it has something to do with the dark magic.” She turned away again, and for the first time she had been working for my family, I saw her burnt hand. Looking back at it, I realized I’ve never asked or noticed anything strange about Rayne. But now I wish I did. I wish she would tell me what the reason was for leaving her job, and coming here, and what the deal was with her strange body that seemed to glow. But I pushed the thoughts to the back of my head. After all, I couldn’t leave my king waiting.
(I hope you enjoy this first chapter of the story! If you have any questions about Rayne, Be sure to read her fan fiction, Rain Brings the Marigolds!)
