Yup, Oakfire is a stallion, and (I'm not 100% sure that I remember this correctly), but I believe that he's also Bumblewind and Echofrost's sire. I think you may be thinking of Twistfire? He's also as stallion, but he was not very quiet about advocating to banish Silvercloud from Sun Herd. Or maybe your referring to Crystalfreather and Rowanwood? But those two, I believe, at least had the excuse that their foal's lives were on the line. The only other character I can think of this might be, would be Maplecloud, but she wasn't even mentioned until several chapters after Silverlake was gone.

Anyway, fun fact, while the only captains listed in the front of the books are stallions, mares can also serve in that position as part of the battle-mare army. It's has minuscule mention in starfire, but Crystalfeather was actually promoted to this rank right before the other herds attacked Sun Herd in starfire (it's the last sentence of the third paragraph on page 165).

My question is, was Oakfire a mare or a stallion? I don't remember, I just vaguely assumed only stallions can become captains.
