    The Shattered Herd Part 14

    in FAN FICTON

Skysun was resting in the patches of sunlight that broke through the trees, her ears flicking absentmindedly, or, at least she APPEARED absentminded. In fact, she was deep in thought. She never stopped wondering why Jungle Herd had captured them…the leaders of the herd just seemed so nice. There was no reason for them to foalnap innocent foals, UNLESS something pushed them to do it. Something that was so out of their control, that they felt like they had no choice BUT to steal foals. This thought appealed to her, and she spent most of her alone time trying to solve the mystery. Maybe if she could figure out WHY they stole foals, maybe she could help fix it, and then they could bring her home. She never let go of her dream of returning to her home in the desert, but, even now, only a few weeks of staying in the Jungle, that thought began to feel slightly traitorous. She pinned her ears back, ‘That’s preposterous…’ She thought, ‘Jungle Herd isn’t my home, Desert Herd is.’ Looking up at the canopy, Skysun sighed, her ears drooping sadly. All of these weeks, and still no word from her father…or her grandfather…the Over-Stallion. Lying her head down on the mossy ground, her mind raced in memories of her home in the Desert, the sand, the warm sun on her back, and, she laughed, practicing flying with her friend…even if it did get them in…prickly situations. But still…not all of the memories were good…the Jungle Herd attack…her mother lying still on the sandy floor…being taken away from her home…Skysun shook her head, it was no use remembering those dark things, they wouldn’t help her now.

“Hey, you alright?” Asked a familiar voice. Lifting her voice, Skysun watched as her friend, Darkfeather, approached, his purple feathers having grown shiny over his time with Jungle Herd.

Skysun shrugged, “I guess I’m just worrying…again…” She muttered, looking away.

Darkfeather snorted, “I told you our herds didn’t care for us…” He muttered, looking away.

She looked at her friend in shock, “You still think that?” She asked.

Darkfeather nodded in reply, “Yeah…I told you before…Lightwing is cruel and Rosecloud doesn’t care for us.”

“Still…you don’t have any hope?” She asked.

    “No…I don’t…” He murmured.

Skysun just sighed in response, “I can’t stop you from thinking that, but I guess I CAN distract you.”

Darkfeather looked at her in confusion, “How can you do that?” He asked.

    “I’ve…been thinking…” She nickered.

Darkfeather’s eyes widened, stepping back in shock, “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT, you? THINKING!? THAT’S dangerous!” He nickered, a playful twinkle in his eyes.

Skysun shoves him with her wing, “Hey!” She nickered with a playful smirk, “Still…you’re not wrong…I DID drag my friend into flying through a cactus patch.”

“Ha!” He laughed, “THAT does not surprise me…” He murmured, looking at her, “Anyway, what were you thinking?”

“I was wondering why Viperwing and Leafcloud were foalnapping well…foals.” She nickered.

“Because they’re evil?” He asked with a tilt of her head.

Skysun snorted, “Do you REALLY think that?” She asked with a roll of her eyes.

“Well…no…” Darkfeather nickered, looking at his hooves.

“I think they were FORCED to.” She nickered, causing her friend to look at her in shock.

“But HOW?” He asked in surprise.

“THAT’S what I want to figure out.” She replied.

    “You want to…huh…WHAT?!”

“Find out WHY they took us.”

“Bu…but, Skysun! THAT could be dangerous! If Oakfire finds out, he WON’T be happy!”

“SEE?” Skysun nickered in triumph, “You associate the cruelness of the herd to OAKFIRE, NOT Viperwing or Leafcloud! I’m SURE they were forced to take us.”

Darkfeather sighed, “You have a good point…” He muttered, looking away.

“So?” She asked hopefully, “Are you going to help me find out what’s going on?” She asked, with a tilt of her head.

Darkfeather sighed, “Fine…” He muttered, his feathers ruffling slightly in Skysun didn’t know what. “Let’s figure out why Viperwing and Leafcloud took all us weanlings.”

Skysun pranced in place, “Let’s figure out why they took us!” She nickered.
