Prologue
“A long time ago…the herds were allies. They traded freely, met frequently, and our rulers met to discuss things, careful not to offend and hurt any of the others. To keep the peace, and to protect the Herds, the Herd Rulers set up a guard consisting of one member from each herd. The Members of the Guard were then each given a stone, however, no one knows what these stones did, or what they were used for.”
“WHAT!?” Shrieked a young pegasus filly, her eyes wide in shock, “You mean they know the stones EXISTED but don’t know what they DO!?”
An old gray mare sighed, her gray wings fluffed up in agitation at being interrupted, “Yes, young Swiftflight. Now may I please get back to my story?”
The bay filly huffed, her shoulders hunching in irritation, “Fiiiiine, Graywind…but I still don’t see why…”
The elder, Graywind, cleared her throat, “AS I was saying…
For Centuries, the Guard Members protected the herds, settling disputes, and driving back adversaries. For Centuries, the Members, as they came and went, were respected by all the Herds, and their advice was always taken. They were peaceful, never aligning themselves with any Herd or the Leader’s Agendas, only doing what was best for ALL the herds. For Centuries…things seemed to be going well…until HE arrived. For Centuries, ever since the Guard was created, they had been in search of something the ancient texts call ‘The Shadow Stone’. It isn’t said whether the Guardians of the Herds ever FOUND the stone and it was simply stolen from the Guard…or if he always had the infamous Shadow Stone.” The old mare looked solemnly at the foals gathered around her, “Unlike the other stones…we have a CLEAR record of what the Shadow Stone does…it corrupts…it controls…and destroys.” She looked at the foals around her, staring at her in shock, “At first, The Guard tired to reason with the Shadow Bearer, attempting peace over war and bloodshed…that…however…was not meant to be.
The Shadow Bearer, who’s true name has been lost to us over the Centuries, wanted total domination. HE wanted to rule the Herds. The Herd Leaders, of course, were all against this, so they rose together against the Ruler of the Shadows. The Herds alone, however, were no match for the power of the Shadow Stone. After every battle, the Shadow Bearer used the stone to corrupt the remaining forces of the Herds, turning them to his side, and controlling them. On the brink of destruction, the Herd Leaders called out to the Guard to help, surely, they, the masters of their stones, could defeat the Shadow Bearer?
The Guard Members agreed, and, with their stones, set out to try and persuade the Bearer of the Shadow Stone to step down…to relent, and to destroy him if he refused. He needed to be stopped, he could NOT be kept around.” The mare sighed, her head drooping slightly, “The Guard succeeded…the Shadow Bearer was stopped…but at a price.” She looked up, looking in the eyes of each foal, “The Guard, along with their stones, and the power they were said to hold, disappeared, never to be seen again.”
The foals all gasped, their wings covering their open mouths, their eyes wide in shock.
The old mare chuckled, “However, not all hope is lost. There are…tales…of steeds from each of the herds who heard…whispers…callings, perhaps, telling them to search for the stones. These callings were never heeded, however, so we do not know what could have been.” Graywind looked at all of the foals in turn, “However, who know, perhaps one of you young ones will hear the calling to a stone…and a great adventure. Will YOU heed the call?”
“Yes, Graywind!” The foals all called in unison, their eyes shining with dreams of greatness and power and influence.
Graywind chuckled, “Good, now go to your parents and leave me be!” She said, using her wings to shoo the foals out of her cave, the foals laughing and giggling all the way. As all the foals left, Graywind sighed, looking infinitely older than the moment before, “If one of them ARE chosen…I hope they heed the call…I believe that something is coming.”
