The Secrets Of The 5 Herds
Chapter One: Cougar
Cyrus raced to the meadow. He couldn’t be out at this time, not this late, especially when a cougar has been spotted in the area. Cyrus went as fast as his long legs could take him.
“Cyrus? Oh, Cyrus!” His dam, Aida, hollered in a sing song voice. Cyrus halted. He was just in time.
“There you are hon! Where have you been?” Aida nodded toward the all the burrs and leaves that stuck onto his fluffy coat.
“Nowhere.” He said, picking out a hunk of dirt from his mane. Cyrus’ sire, Gamin, trotted next to them.
“Nowhere hmm?” The strawberry roan stallion nickered in a voice so low Cyrus felt the vibration rumbling in his chest. Cyrus nodded, gulping down his fear of his own sire. Gamin was the over-stallion after all. The son of an over-stallion was treated exceptionally, but all the foals were afraid of you. His sire watched Cyrus, along with the every move the foals do near him. It made his friends nervous, along with himself. It would scare anyone to be inspected on every move you make, made a young colt like him nervous. The only foals that weren’t afraid were his two friends Ash and Badger. At the thought of Ash and Badger, he wondered where they were? As he trotted off, Cyrus heard the whinny of his dam.
“Don’t go off to far! There’s a cougar in the area and you have to attend a meeting with the herd!”
Cyrus rolled his eyes, she meant Gamin had to attend a meeting. He just had to be there to smile, wave, and humiliate himself. In another way, it was required for a over-stallion’s son to be present, and all the while standing there somehow learning about the concept of meetings and how to solve everyday problems. Cyrus still didn’t get it, but of course, he couldn’t say that out-loud. Cyrus broke into a gallop, would his friends be the lunch of a mountain lion?
“Hey Cyrus.” A black pinto colt whinnied.
Cyrus perked his ears, he knew it was Badger immediately when he heard him.
“Badger.” Cyrus exhaled, relieved.
“Yup, Ash is coming, but did you hear-”
“That there was a cougar spotted near the herd? Yeah, Aida told me.”
Badger trembled, obviously worried about this cougar. Cyrus nudged his friend on the side, trying to cheer him up.
“Hey, I bet this happens all the time- plenty of cougars probably passed by before we were born, we’ll be fine.”
“I hope your right.” Badger nickered, more relaxed but still tense.
“Come on, let’s find Ash.”
Badger nodded in agreement, and the friends looked around the meadow, keeping one eye out for the cougar, and the other for their dear friend Ash. Cyrus sniffed the ground, hoping to see the misty white fur of his friend whoosh past the bushes. After awhile of searching, now, Cyrus grew tense. Suddenly, he spied a flash of white woosh past them on the corner of their eye, just as he hoped.
“Ash?” He stuttered.
The filly came into view, yes, it was the pretty filly herself, galloping towards them her expression blank with fear.
“Run!” She yelled.
Cyrus didn’t stick around to find out why and bolted blindly, along with Badger. He panted, his breaths coming out quick and short. He begged his heart not to explode by all the sudden chaos around him. While running, Cyrus managed to yell over the gusting winds.
“What are we running from?” He asked, but Cyrus could only guess what.
“Cougar!” Ash panted over her shoulder.
Cyrus wished he could say he was surprised. He turned his head, picking up speed. The three of them were blurs of white, black pinto and palomino trampling bushes and jumping over tree stumps. Blood rushed through his veins as he pumped his head back and forth with his ears back, mane flowing, legs a blur, his heart thumping a little to quickly in his ears, he ran for his short lived life. Then, he noticed something, Cyrus didn’t hear or see the cougar.
“Guys wait.” He said, slowing down. Ash and Badger slid to a halt, Badger almost tripping over.
“What?” Ash said between gasps of air.
“I don't hear it.”
“Neither do I.” Badger agreed.
“We should get back to the herd,” Cyrus explained. “Were far enough already.” The trio agreed and began heading back to the herd. Only weanlings, they’ve just escaped from a cougar, or have they..
Heading back to the herd, a low hum made Cyrus sway. It transfixed him until he noticed that wasn’t a hum. It was a growl. He was about to break into a canter when the a huge, tawny puma lunged at them. Cyrus squealed with fear. He jumped, and so did the cougar, shaving off the very edge of his silky tail.
“AGH!” Cyrus whinnied, he escaped the blow by a hair.
They were all tired from the last retreat. They all bolted again, for what seemed like forever. Forever, forever is a long time. Night came upon them like a blanket of darkness, by then they were out of the meadow, and the cougar grew tired and retreated. Ash shuttered in the cold and dark night. “I- I- I- I think we- were lost.”
Chapter Two: Lost
Badger hid behind Cyrus, his teeth clattering with fear. “We… have to go back…” Cyrus said, scared himself.
“Where is back?” Ash asked. “Er..” Cyrus looked behind him, no sign of the herd, not even the meadow. He looked to his right, nothing but open plains, and to his left, same thing. “I er- don't know.” They all went silent. The only noise present was the skittering of rats and the swaying of trees. A hoot of an owl came from behind them.
“AH!” Badger screamed.
“Keep screaming and we’ll draw the wolves to.” The palomino weanling warned. Badger shut his muzzle. Silence laid upon the three of them. They were just weanlings, lost and exposed on the open plains, where cougars, wolves, coyotes, foxes, and badgers were lurking in the darkness of the plains.
“Were so dead…” Ash whispered. Badger and Cyrus nodded. Another a moment of silence until Cyrus couldn’t take it anymore. “We can’t stand here and wait for something to end our blasted lives, we have to move. C’mon, let’s to find Oak Herd.” Cyrus turned his head walking to where, no one knew. Badger and Ash looked at eachother, but followed there determined friend. “Were dead, were dead, were dead.” Ash repeated on the way as Badger slouched, tears welling up in his blue eyes.
“I miss mommy.” He confessed.
Cyrus hated to admit it, but he missed his own family to, even Gamin, he felt alone and empty, it was them against the harsh terrain, and deep inside, he knew they wont make it to the next moon.
The next morning, Cyrus rolled to his hooves. He didn’t remember sleeping. He looked to his right and found Ash and Badger sleeping together, he nickered softly in amusement, but shook them awake.
“What… what…AH!’ Ash whinnied as she was face to face with a now awake black pinto, blue eyed colt. Badger’s eyes widened as he stood up. When he got a hold of himself Badger stood up and arched his neck. “Woah, I dont remember sleeping.”
“Me to!” Cyrus whinnied.
Ash who was quiet, recovered and changed the subject. “I’m hungry.”
Badger and Cyrus nodded in agreement. They trotted to a patch of juicy grasses and lowered there heads to graze, thank goodness they were just recently weaned, otherwise they wouldn’t make it. When they had there fill, the three weanlings continued on there way searching. Little did they know, they were going farther away from the herd, and closer, to another.
They walked for a phew hours now until they heard a russle of leaves and a clattering a hooves.
“Did anyone hear that?” Cyrus asked.
“Nope.” Badger whinnied.
“Not me.” Ash snorted.
“Your Probably right.”
But then he heard it again.
“Okay, now I heard that.” Badger neighed.
“More cougars? Wolves maybe?”
Cyrus and Badger shrugged. Without words, they decided to split up and investigate. Cyrus looked ariund the plains, it was so flat it’s almost impossible to hide it, except for the tall grasses, but Cyrus wasn’t to sure.
He sighed, all this losing his parents, out lost in the open, pron to predators stuff made him sick to his stomach, it was just to much What now.. He thought with a quiet groan.
Thank you for reading this ;-;
-comes back from the dead- IS THERE MORE YET?!?!?!?!
Yeah I totally agree
Exactly
Oh nvm probalby because it makes the readers want to read more
Why?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I think that's a good thing Rain
Oh Rain that's just Wispi
Why do I cause so many killlings ;c
I read it last night! In the beginning I read it aloud so Magentablaze could hear (remember, we’re sisters AND roommates), but when I explained that the story was about horses and not pegasi, she said “I only listen to pegasus stories.” So then I read the rest to myself. SHE HAS NO IDEA WHAT SHE WAS MISSING!!!! That is so, so good Rain. Badger and Ash are ADORABLE. But how could you leave us with so much suspense?! You know that I never survive- -dies of suspense before can finish sentence-
Yeah I agree
I only had time to read the beginning right now, but I’ll print it out so I can read the rest of this tonight. The beginning was good so far though Rain!
When I saw the name "Cyrus," My heart stopped for a second because we are reading this SCARY book called Shadow House and Cyrus is like one of untrusted ghosts that tortures the kids at least we think.
Descriptions:
Ash: a ghostly white pretty weanling filly, black eyes
Badger: Handsome black pinto weanling colt, light blue eyes, kinda like Thunderray
Cyrus: Dashing palomino weanling colt, deep brown eyes, one hind right pastern
Flamefrost. U are correct c: and no they don't have wings. That's why I said it wasn't a fan fiction >.<
Flamefrost I ended up wondering the same thing. I think they are horses though.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! Please post the next few chapters soon. Btw if you really want to get published, go to blurb.com for help.
And Dragon, I'm pretty sure Ash is white (or pale gray) Cyrus is a palomino, and Badger is a black-and-white pinto. One question, Rainfeather, do they have wings? And if so what colors are they?
I.... AM...... SPEACHLESS...... AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What Dragon said! I bet I'll read you in print one day soon. This is easy author material! Please post next chapter soon, I'm DYING!
By the way, Ashyrus for life
This is amazing Rain! Great work, but I would like to ask about what the characters descriptions are (it was getting a little confusing in parts when you referred to the characters by their colorings)
