Fernpuddle could hear whispers around him from almost every corner of the meadow. Everyone could tell he was a foreign pegasus, which would make escaping even harder. His eyes swept over the pegasi around him. No one in particular stuck out to him, but that didn’t matter. This might be something the weanling had to do alone.
He decided to actually see what they were whispering about. Fernpuddle perked up his ears in order to hear what they were saying. One of the nearby pegasi said “Look at that weanling, he looks so strange!” and another “Look at how dark that pelt is!” The thing was, Fernpuddle didn’t have a dark pelt. His auburn pelt was pretty light.
Then, he realized they weren’t even looking at him. They were looking over him. Fernpuddle swung his head to see what, or who, they were looking at. It was a pitch black weanling, and the darkness didn’t even seem to make his pelt darker. A spark of hope suddenly ignited inside of him. He wouldn’t have to travel all the way to Desertherd and back to save the black foal!
Nobody had seemed to notice he was out of place yet, so instead he decided to go over to the black foal. He folded his wings and had his head down hoping not to draw attention to himself. Quickly but carefully, he trotted over to where the captives were.
The small black foal didn’t even seem to look up as he sat down beside him. Fernpuddle’s legs were folded under his chest, along with his wings neatly folded along his back. “So, you must be the black foal.” Fernpuddle nickered. Yet, the black foal still didn’t bother to look up. “I’m Fernpuddle, I’m also a captive…”
With that the black foal looked up. His eyes were dull, as if he had no hope left. Nothing. They were just, dull. That’s when a stronger pegasus walked up from behind. Fernpuddle was scared it was a guard, but it was a friendly voice. “I’m Larkfire- I mean Larkfall.” It was Larkfire? The person who had killed his parents…
“Larkfire? You mean the captain of Desertherd who left me and my sister orphaned?”
Larkfall was stunned for a moment. All he could do was stare at the weanling for a moment. “I would never do that. Or at least I would never mean to-” He said trying to regain his former posture.
Fernpuddle slowly came to realize that Larkfire, or Larkfall now apparently, didn’t ever mean to orphan him. That wasn’t his intention. The three sat for a moment in silence before Larkfall broke it. “So, why are you over here with us?”
“It’s a long story. I’ll have to tell you it later.” Fernpuddle looked over to the black foal then back at Larkfall.
“What do you mean later?” Larkfall had a puzzled look on his face. In his mind, it wasn’t likely they were ever to see each other again after this.
Fernpuddle’s voice quickly dropped to a whisper. The guards were mostly just chatting with one another, or surveying the area half asleep. Hopefully they wouldn’t notice this. “I’m going to help you escape.”
The black foal suddenly shot up from a random thought. “Escape? Are you crazy?” He almost said loud enough for the guards to hear. Luckily, they didn’t seem to realize that was what they were talking about.
“No, I’m not crazy. But you’ll be safe where I’m from. Jungleherd that is.” Fernpuddle began to explain.
“But, we just had a battle with them only two moons ago! That is the least safe place to go!” Larkfall exclaimed in a loud whisper.
“The only reason we fought that war was so that Copperwing wouldn’t execute the black foal.” Fernpuddle said.
Larkfall and the black foal gave each other weird looks. Had they not known this? It was as if they thought the complete opposite. “I-is something wrong?” Fernpuddle stuttered. The black foal and Larkfall gave each other a few whispers and sideways glances at Fernpuddle.
“Alright… So what’s your plan…?” Larkfall said, finally looking at Fernpuddle. And Fernpuddle had just the right idea.
