Patchfeather followed Coldfire to a small clearing on the opposite side of the river from the rest of Snow Herd.
Icewing and the rest of the scouting patrol were waiting when Patchfeather landed.
"Is this your group Coldfire?" asked Icewing. He looked tired, Patchfeather wondered if Icewing had gotten any sleep that night.
Coldfire stepped forward, "Yes, their all here." he awnsered.
Icewing looked around the gathered pegasi, "We have received word that Mountain Herd is planning an attack on Snow Herd, and they plan to ambush us while we're migrating. I usually send a patrol ahead of the herd to scout for dangers along the way, but since Snow Herd is already weakened by the long winter and then the fire, your job is even more important."
Patchfeather had to clench her teeth together just so she didn't whinny like a foal. She was excided about going on an important mission, but then she thought about Dragonfrost and Smokemoon. Neither of them were going, and anyway Dragonfrost's wing wasn't completely healed yet. Thinking about her friends made Patchfeather suddenly feel nervous.
Patchfeather was dragged out of her thoughts by Icewing's voice, "Your main objective is to keep a look out for any Mountain Herd activity along the migration route Snow Herd is taking. If you find anything get word to me immediately."
Icewing turned to Coldfire, "Witch ones are your messengers?"
"Patchfeather, and Beanwind." said Coldfire, as he used his wing to point to Patchfeather and a smallish black leopard appaloosa stallion with white wings.
Icewing turned back to face the rest of the team, "Patchfeather and Beanwind are designated as the messengers for this mission, there the ones who will fly back and forth between your group and me."
Then Icewing turned to Patchfeather and Beanwind, "When you are delivering news, you are to give it to me directly. Snow Herd is already scared enough, they don't need to know about a potential attack from Mountain Herd. Is that clear?"
"Yes sir!" said the whole patrol together.
Icewing flapped his wings and flew back to his herd.
Coldfire turned to his group, "I don't want a single word that has been said here to be repeated to some one side this group. I will let you return to the herd and say your good byes, we will meet back here in one hour, you may go now."
