Thank you guys for the amazing poems so far!
Here is a fun persona poem that I like! The author wrote The Handmaid’s Tale, if you have heard of that. She is still alive today. My favorite part of this poem is the personality of the speaker, the mythological siren. Sirens are commonly known as being evil creatures that lure sailors overboard. Not something I would want to run into!
Warning for implied deaths.
Siren Song
By Margaret Atwood
This is the one song everyone
would like to learn: the song
that is irresistible:
the song that forces men
to leap overboard in squadrons
even though they see the beached skulls
the song nobody knows
because anyone who has heard it
is dead, and the others can't remember.
Shall I tell you the secret
and if I do, will you get me
out of this bird suit?
I don't enjoy it here
squatting on this island
looking picturesque and mythical
with these two feathery maniacs,
I don't enjoy singing
this trio, fatal and valuable.
I will tell the secret to you,
to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song
is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can,
you are unique
at last. Alas
it is a boring song
but it works every time.
Sirens are quite interesting beings...to think of a song so enticing that the sailors follow it without a second thought...it's magic in a dark and enchanting form.
I really like the perspective of the Siren in this poem. The Siren does not seem to enjoy the job, but still, they sing their boring song and watch as another sailor meets their doom.
You see, this is poetry I can understand. It's straight to the point! And I love the myth part. I find it fascinating.
