She glanced behind her, "No, Kifo. You didn't make me mad." She turned back forward and trotted faster, puffing out her wings. "I'm just ready to get back to the clearing."
He stumbled off of Dovefrost’s back, refusing to be carried around. He also did not like leaving the ground, and he turned to canter alongside them, matching pace and answered, “It’s not me we need to worry about, Vida!” He flicked his ears behind him when he noticed Silren and Astro galloping up to them, also escaping a dazed wolf that would seen come out of its temporary torpor. He was glad to see all of them okay, but was worried for Vida. Even from the ground, he could still clearly see the scratches and bites running along her left flank and back muscles. Of course, he expression still betrayed nothing and remained in its stiff position.
Dovefrost was on her way back to the foals when she was Bakari and then she grabbed him and put him on her back next to Vida, "No more doing stupid things to save each other!" She shouted to them. Vida laughed, "Yes mother I don't want to ever have to put them in that position again." Her voice was drenched in pain. Her leg was damaged and her side was bleeding.
Vida:
She winced, every turn her mother made caused her to have to hold in a shriek. She pretended that her grimaces were smiles. "So Bakari, how are you doing?" Her heart rate sped up and her breathing started to hurry and she started to pant.
“C’mon, Thea!” He commanded, his voice resonate and firm as she scrambled towards the tree. “I’ll go and help Vida,” he promised as he bolted in the opposite direction. He was worried, but not even that could break through his hard mask of indifference and determination as he sped towards Vida and Dovefrost, straight towards the ice tigers.
He stared at his friend, "Climb, Thea, or I swear I'm waiting here with you." He snapped, then quickly shoved Thea towards the tree.
She looked close to tears and she was trembling, shedding dark purple feathers as she ran towards the tree. Thea's eyes were rimmed with white and her heart pounded.
She flew up the tree and scouted The best way for Bakari and Anblick to climb up.
"Here" she said showing them a safe way. Once they were at the top she thought about what to do.
"I've been studying these animals. They are skiddish, like other cats. We should be able to use that to our advantage." She said trying to think of a way to save her friends.
Kifo:Kifo panicked and started to try to go after Vida.
Vida:
Vida turned and saw Astro and Silren and then she jumped from her mothers back. She glided toward them, her wings were still to tired to fly. Her side dripping blood she rushed at a ice tiger. He snagged at her with his paw but she dodge and kept running in circles. when the other foals were far enough away she stopped and then she said, "Everyone safe?! Good!" Then she slowly tried to hobble to the foals but a tiger grabbed her and held her down. She squealed and with a mighty kick, Dovefrost rammed the tiger grabbed her filly and they started for the trees.
He curled his wings around Bumbleberry, keeping him secure in his back. "Keep your head low Bumbleberry." He said softly to the colt so he wouldn't panic.
Thea:
She skidded to a halt as she heard Vida's last remarks. "Vida!!!" She screamed. She started to run towards the pace she'd last saw Vida, hoping to still help her, but Anblick guessed her intensions and jumped in front of her, blocking her path. "Thea, don't."
"I'm not leaving without her! Anblick, out of my way!" Sh said sternly, but Anblick didn't back down. "Thea, listen to me. Vida did what she did so you can be safe. You running after her is the exact opposite of what she would have wanted." He whispered sweetly to the panicked Thea. But, Thea only shook her head and stamped her hooves, "NO! I'm not leaving! I can't, Anblick! I have to help her. She might still be alive and I can do something to save her!" She cried, not knowing that Dovefrost had already saved Vida. "No, Thea, no! Climb the dang tree!!! I'm not losing another friend today! Climb Thea!" He shouted to her, abandoning his whispers. He could smell the tigers- they were approaching the edge of the clearing. He looked up at Bakari, pleading him to do something. "You're the only one she'll listen to!" He said through eye contact.
She panicked as she saw a gray figure dive down from a tree. Originally, she had thought it was another ice tiger, but then noticed the figure too big for that, and realized it was Astro coming to her rescue. She bolted in the direction of the foals, following Astro as quickly as she could. She felt much gratitude towards him and wondered why everyone thought him so rough around the edges. He had just saved her life, and nothing she could ever do would repay him. “Thank you, Astro!” She shouted to him as she continued to gallop after him.
"What a day." muttered Lilith, as she rushed after the other foals. She briefly wondered if they remembered that ice tigers were actually quite skilled at climbing trees, and pegasi -- especially ones that couldn't fly yet -- were next to useless at it. But as they ran, it seemed more likely that the foals of Shadow Herd would just keep on going, and would hopefully eventually out run their pursuers.
Astro-
Astro had been to far away to hear Iden's warning about the ice tigers, and was still his tree as the rest of Shadow Herd pelted away. He was about to go after them, when he suddenly noticed one of the tigers, and realized with horror that it appeared to be stalking Silren who had not been able to travel as fast as the others on account of her much to large wings. Thinking quickly, Astro snapped off a near by branch, and dropped it on the head of the tiger. Confused, it stopped and looked around, then down at the stick. Without hesitating, Astro took the opportunity to dive, and he managed to land a few quick blows to it's head.
Normally, this would have done nothing to the cat, but a few months before, Astro had figured out how to sharpen his hooves, and considering that he and his herd mates were in a constant state of danger, he had chosen to maintain them. So, as he flapped away, the tiger was left with a few semi deep cuts on it's head. Not enough to kill it, but it was enough to leave it in a dazed, "Run Silren!" Astro shouted, "Run!"
Vida:Vida whinnied and started to run back to camp but she stopped and looked at Bakari and said, "No Mater What Happens to me KEEP running and get Kifo and Bumbleberry safe, Thea too."
Then turning she ran.
Kifo screamed, "NO VIDA COME BACK!" He darted after her but Dovefrost held him in her wings
"No Kifo you can't go after her, No!" She turned to Bakari, "Can you get him safe?! I need to look for my filly!" With that she left him in Bakari's care and darted after Vida.
Vida heard the tigers closing in and shouted, "Over here!" Luring them over to her. Hoping to give the others a chance to escape. Her body was still weak so she could not fly and she was scared that they would kill her. "Come here and get me." She zipped around them, using all her strength and when she could not run any more she shouted. "RUN SHADOW HERD!" and she darted into a tree and when the tigers chased her up the tree and she jumped, gliding and she hit the next tree running. She darted tree to tree. Jumping, gliding and just being annoying. A tiger grabbed her and gave a rip to her left flank. Another grabbed her right leg. She felt ready to die and then suddenly a gray paint came flashing through the trees kicked the tigers and yelled at Vida, "Get on my back!" Vida did as she was told and then Dovefrost flew low and manedge to kill 2 tigers and get them both to safety.
Bumbleberry:Bumbleberry panicked when they had all started being loud. He climbed onto Anblicks back and when they started to run he thought they were playing a game.
He flicked his ears to Thea and said, “I was looking for Marlcloud. She hasn’t yet returned from her journey to find the foals, and I’m wondering if she’s safe. I also am concerned to as where Silren has run off to, again.” He heaved an exasperated sigh at that last part. His cousin was always running off when she wasn’t supposed to, but the only problem was that she could go unseen and unheard into the shadows as if she were never there.
Upon looking over her shoulder, she saw Bakari and Anblick both searching for something. She slowed a little, not wanting to leave them. She slowed to where she was cantering alongside Bakari. Thea asked, "What's wrong? Who are you looking for?" She called to both the colts.
Anblick:
He responded with a worried whinny, "It's Silren. I can't see her and I don't know where she is!" He called to Thea and Bakri, who also looked anxious about something.
He followed quickly after Thea, making up quite the distance within only 4 of his great strides. He looked behind him to make sure everyone else was following. The biggest burning question in his mind involved his aunt, Marlcloud. Where was she?
She nodded then chuckled. "Yeah. That's a much better idea. Okay, everyone! Let's go!" She said, turning towards the thick canopy with Anblick following her.
Anblick:
He sniffed the air again, "Hurry everyone! They're almost here!" He whinnied, and at that Thea broke into a canter, remembering that Bakari couldn't fly and ran towards the canopy. She looked over her shoulder, making sure Bakari and the others were following.
Anblick:
He glanced around, looking for Silren. He didn't know why, but he wanted to make sure she was safe. When he didn't see her, he pranced nervously. The tiger smell was getting stronger and stronger.
At the new idea he was perplexed and then whispered, “Uh, Thea? Silren and I cannot fly just yet, so that plan wouldn’t work. I suggest we take to the canopies and hide in the thickest branches,” he snorted, pointing his wing to a certain thick spot. He knew some jaguars could climb trees, but he had heard that they were native to a jungle extremely far south from where he stood. So, he figured that Marlcloud knew best, and Marlcloud was the one who had taught him to always try to get into the canopies. Of course, he and Silren would have to work harder since they couldn’t fly, but the others would be safe.
"Great! That's just what we need." She sighed exasperated, glancing around at the other foals. "We could just fly away! Cats can't follow us into the sky." She said, unfurling her wings.
Anblick:
"No!" He called to Thea. He rushed over to her, shaking his head. "These are smart cats and they're probably hungry. They'd just wait until our wings got tired and we landed so they could pounce. Flying isn't the best idea." He explained.
Thea:
She rolled her eyes. "Oh please. They're cats, their not that smart. And besides, I didn't mean fly as in hover- I meant fly as in leave. Why don't we just leave?" Thea asked.
Anblik:
He shrugged, admitting that leaving was a possibility. "I dunno. But, they could follow us, wherever we go." He whispered to Thea. His eyes suddenly went round and his nostrils flared. "Actually, I changed my mind! I don't care what we do, but we need to do it now! I can smell them-they're coming closer!" He whinnied, completely forgetting his shy nature and became more worried about helping his friends survive.
Bakari:
He stumbled off of Dovefrost’s back, refusing to be carried around. He also did not like leaving the ground, and he turned to canter alongside them, matching pace and answered, “It’s not me we need to worry about, Vida!” He flicked his ears behind him when he noticed Silren and Astro galloping up to them, also escaping a dazed wolf that would seen come out of its temporary torpor.
