If you hold your hand like the picture, that is one "hand." To measure a horse's height, you put one hand on top of the other repeatedly from its hoof to its withers (shoulder). A man's hand held like this is roughly 4 inches (thumb to base of pinky) and if the horse isn't exactly the height of the man's hands (14 hands, 15 hands, etc.) the number of extra fingers is the decimal. Does that help?

I'm 14.2 hands and I'm just putting it out there that the decimals in the hands system can't be above 0.3. 0.1 is one inch, and there are four inches in a hand, so 0.4 is one hand. So Lightray is 17.2, Hazelblaze is 17.1, and Elmwing/glade is 19.1 (that's really tall!)

I counted myself and I was 11 hands but I couldn't add that for my pegasus because that would be a world record and kinda unbelievable...
