Welcome to the Message Board Meadowleaf! My name is Windfeather and that's what everyone calls me. I hope you enjoy your time here!
@MeadowleafHmm.... I don’t feel like that’s a good idea, but again, I was raised English, so it may be different xD What is intermediate for western? For eventing and jumping and such we have levels, like, beginner, beginner novice, etc. I’m not up to beginner novice yet, still working on all the basics of jumping to strengthen my muscles lol.
I mean, my mother first got an unbroken four year old Arabian mare when she was twelve, so, you do you, I guess! But, I will tell you she was scared of her horse for most of her time with her. She was originally an endurance rider (competing on trail) and then went to eventing. But I’m just saying, it’s NEVER a good idea to start out with a green horse.... No matter if you feel confident... How long have you been riding? I’ve only been riding for (technically) a little while :3
I don't have much experience with buying horses though my instructor made do a project on it once. Like Nightmist said, there are a lot of things to take into consideration: experience, breed, riding discipline, health, budget, color (though I wouldn't worry to much about that), age, etc. I'd suggest sitting down and writing a specific list of things you hope to accomplish with your horse, this will help you fill in any of the blanks you may have when you're searching.
As for western riding, this is the area of riding I'm the most conformable with (though technically, it's more of a 'hybrid' riding style since usually I do direct reign with western saddle). My advice is to not let your riding abilities get sloppy. The larger size of the saddle provides a whole lot more leeway when it comes to riding errors, and as I found when I started riding English which is a whole lot more sensitive seat, I realized that I had developed a lot of 'lazy' habits from riding western all the time.
thank you Nightmist, i like Western cuz im interested in being a rancher. i might try english but i dont think my riding teacher teaches it so i would have to find a whole different teacher. im sort of an intermeidiet leval, but i would also have a lot of help cuz im thinking of keeping it at her place. also im going to buy a weanling i think. my riding teacher thinks its ok that i get her young, partly because i want to train it myself. not saddle train it, but like train it to lead and load or somthing like that lol. Thank you Morningmist, for welcoming me!
@Meadowleaf I don’t know anything about buying horses, but welcome to the board!
Hello Meadowleaf, and welcome to the MB! :D
Buying a horse is tricky.... First, I’d go for a very experienced horse, so not a green bean xD Assuming you’re still learning, of course! But you should never put green (inexperienced) with green. It should always either be inexperienced+experienced or experienced+experienced.
It also depends (however slightly) on which kind of riding your going to be doing. Are you going to be doing high and advanced Western riding, endurance competing, etc? Or are you going to be an eventer, showjumper, hunter jumper, or dressage queen? I mean, there are, like, so many different things! Of course you can be more than one, though xD For instance, there’s western dressage lol
But, if you’re interested in jumping, I wouldn’t continue with western.... Or at least with a western saddle. The horn isn’t suitable for jumping, or standing in two-point (basically standing up off the horse‘s back over a jump).
I, personally, am an eventer. I’ve tried western before, but honestly, have no idea what it’s all about xD Perhaps you can tell me lol. I like jumping tho, so that’s why I’m an english bean :3
I don’t necessarily earn money, but if you’re interested in earning, let’s say, lessons from your trainer, doing stalls and watering and turning in/out can be great ways to do it! (I do it lol, so my parent’s don’t have to pay for my lessons xD )
No problemo!
thanks!
XD is just basically a face, XD and 😂are like the same face,
thats cool about the jumps! also what does XD mean? i havent even considerd jumps yet, but i want to learn english when im better at western
It's alright, I'm a fast typer, and I'm active like a ton, so yeah XD
sorry for that. i keep getting yours as soon as i send replys
Not to hard, I do jumping, so it took a few weeks (One lesson a week) to learn the half-seat, I'm stilil not doing full jumps, just mostly trotting over them, untill I learn Cantering/Lopeing
thanks anyway. is English hard?
Awesome!
my riding teacher helps me with a lot of stuff other than riding:)
Welp, alright I'll still give a few pointers, I used to ride western but I do english now.
There's all the directing with reining and leg cues, that's all I I honestly remember from western.
Western, not Wesern
welllll i did sort of mean that but im riding Wesern
Ooooooh I thought you meant pointers on buying a horse, okay English or Western riding?
