Morning Star nudged the fallen leaves aside revealing her prize beneath them. A bush of ripe, blueberries. Morning Star dug a shallow indent in the dirt around the base before gently tugging the small bush out of the ground. A howl split the silence and a dull pounding began making its way into Morning Star’s head. Panic, she realised. The dire wolves were mating again, making them more active than usual. Morning Star began prancing around the clearing, ears swivelling and eyes darting around madly. Her sky herder instincts kicked in as a snarl erupted from nearby. Shadows darted among the trees, they were trying to herd her. Not going to work, Morning Star thought smugly as she found she had the advantage. Her keen eyes scanned the clearing, there! A gap in the wolves’ circling. Morning Star braced herself before shooting through the trees and up into the sky, smoothly dodging the attempts to bring her crashing back down. Morning Star span through the sky, the wolves long gone. She adjusted the shrub in her mouth and continued on towards Moon Meadow.
Morning Star joined the sky herder patrol before touching down outside the Healing Cave. Jade Root greeted her, taking the berries and stashing them in the storage pit. “How many dire wolves?” Was her first question. Morning Star rolled her eyes.”Six. It wasn’t hard and I’m not hurt, to answer your next questions.”Jade Root snorted but continued slicing the remaining berries with her hooves. “Was Lily in the patrol you hijacked and took control of?”
“No. Never again.”Morning Star shuddered and Jade Root smirked.
“That’s my sister for you.”
Morning Star made to leave the cave but Jade Root spoke again, softly this time.”They worry, just like me. Can you blame them?” Morning Star halted and breathed through her aunt’s nostrils in answer.” You still have medicine mare practise tomorrow.” At that Morning Star nickered softly and nodded before trotting out.
