@Lightray In the books from what i remember its a tradition for mares to conceive a foal every year It was one of the reasons Birchcloud was so upset that she gave birth to stillborns so often

@Karma @Lightray From what I remember it was less of a tradition and more of something that was a "special ability" that mares from Mountain Herd had, whereas mares from the other herds were only able to have to maybe 2-3 foals in their lifetime. So it was more of an individual choice vs. a mandatory requirement. Which I think would make sense since Mountain Herd is one of the herds known for having Sky Herders, a force predominantly consisting of mares, and I can see it being pretty difficult to be pregnant from 11 months out of the year and still be apparat of an elite group of fighters.

Theres a popular myth amongst the other herds that her feathers are stained by the blood of the wars shes won. Of course, just a myth... Right?
