Honeyfall was standing in a forest she didn't recognize. It looked like Snow Herd's territory, but it was in the middle of winter. The sky was black, no moon or stars were visible. Snow swirled at the bay filly's hooves, and a sent of death filled her nose.
'Hello?' she called, and her voice echoed.
Then Honeyfall caught a flash of white out of the corner of her eye, she turned and came face to face with a pure white stallion. At first she thought it might be Snowfrost, but this stallion was full grown, and he had a shimmering glow about him.
'Honeyfall.' Honeyfall thought she heard the stallion say her name, but his lips had never moved.
'Who are you?' demanded Honeyfall.
'I was once a known as Blacksnow.' said the stallion, again, speaking without his lips moving.
'What do you want?'
'To help you.'
'I don't need help.'
'Oh you poor filly, you need help rather or not you admit it.'
Honeyfall glared at the stallion, he was really starting to get on her nerves. Who did this stallion think he was. Why couldn't he just take a hint and get lost?
'What's your deal? I already told you I don't want your help.'
'Ah, so you do admit you need help. You just don't want mine.'
'Leave me alone.'
'Not allowed to.'
'What is that supposed to mean?'
Blacksnow look exasperated, 'I was once like you.'
'What are you talking about?' suddenly Honeyfall was interested in what this stallion wanted to say.
'Three hundred years ago.' said Blacksnow, still not moving his mouth, 'My dam gave birth to twins. Me, and my brother. What made us different was that my brother was a black foal.'
Honeyfall gasped, how could this be? In all the tales she had been told about the black foals, none of them mentioned any of the them having a twin. 'What happened?' asked Honeyfall.
'My brother, the black foal ,was born dead. But I lived.' said Blacksnow, continuing on with his story. 'Our mother died only minuets after we were born, and left me in the wings of the medicine mare that had helped delivered my brother and I. Snowroot was very wise, and knew that Snow Herd would not accept me into the herd. So she sent me to the vein with her two adult foals, and made it look as if my dam had only given birth to one foal.'
'Why are you telling me this?' asked Honeyfall.
'To show you that I know what it's like to loose everything because of a black foal.'
'Look, I'm trying to help you.'
'I already told you, I don't need help.'
'Fine, if you wont let me help you, at least hear this: Petalcloud doesn't care about you, she's using you because she only wants to stay in power.' and with that Blacksnow disappeared.
Honeyfall's eyes popped open, the sun was just peaking up above the horizon. The filly remembered the events that had taken place the day before, after Lakefir had received his death blow. Honeyfall had returned to Ashberry and Willowglow, and had hung around with them the rest of the day. She had wanted to check on Pebblebreeze, but Honeyfall couldn't bring herself to face her friend, not after she had watched Pebblebreeze call Petalcloud a 'filthy murder' in front of everyone in Snow Herd.
"You should come talk to Pebblebreeze." said a familiar voice
Honeyfall jumped, and saw Snowfrost was standing next to her, "How's she doing?"
"Okay, it was quite a shock for her yesterday." replied Snowfrost.
"I can't even imagine what she's going through." said Honeyfall.
"Yeah." Snowfrost scraped his hooves across the ground in front of him, "I was pretty surprised my self. Me and Dragonflight were pretty close, we were like brothers, but I never knew he wanted to follow the black foal."
Honeyfall stared at him as wave after wave of guilt washed over her, "I-I didn't know you were so close."
Snowfrost looked at the ground, "My dam died giving birth to me, and my sire never claimed me as his colt. Sunnyglow kinda took me in and raised me. So Dragonflight and Pebblebreeze are sorta like my brother and sister."
"I'm so sorry." said Honeyfall, "That must have be hard."
"Yeah, it was." Snowfrost looked up, "But what's done is done. Right now Pebblebreeze needs her friends."
Honeyfall nodded, and reluctantly said, "Let's go visit her."
