Moondancer lay in the shade of a tree with her eyes closed. She was dreaming of things that had happened recently. There had been an attack from Snow Herd. Desert Herd of course had won but many were still recovering. Her sister had died in that battle. So instead of a regular name they used the ancient Desert Language (Arabic) to name her for a legend. She would never forget her sisters real name. It was Willowdance. Her legend name was Shujae (Shoo-jahn) which meant "Brave," in the ancient language. (Arabic.)
She opened her eyes to a very sunny and hot day. She stood and craned her neck. She stretched out her wings and stretched out her legs. She looked West to where the Tail River lay and she flew into the air. She curled her wing tips and gripped her legs to her stomach. She perked her ears and craned her neck. She was very unusual. She was built like a desert steed but looked nothing like one. Her mother had been from Snow Herd which had made it devastating for them when the attack just happened. Her mother had been captured by Snow Herd and now Desert Herd was plotting how to get her back especially her father Dustshadow.
Her mother's name was Winterleaf. She looked more like her mother than any other. Her mother was a gray mare with a wide blaze, black mane and tail, two front socks, and dark blue wings. She was very beautiful and burly and heavy coated like a Snow Herd steed which she was. She had lost a lot of her coat in Desert Herd and had adapted to her surroundings. Moondancer couldn't think of how hard it would be to then adapt to a cold environment. This caused her shoulder to shiver a bit and she faltered and fell a few feet but caught herself and shot forward. She curved her wingtips, pinned her ears, and straightened her neck and dived down. The air breezed by her and then opened her wings, unfurled her legs, craned her neck, pricked her ears, and landed.
She tossed her head and looked around. A few colts and fillies were there playing. A palomino colt with dark emerald wings glanced at her and whispered to the others in the group. They all started laughing at his joke about Moondancer and Moondancer's heart sunk. She was never liked in the herd because she had looked so different. She walked up to the lake and took a drink. She pulled up her head and let the water drip off her muzzle. The group was getting closer to her and soon she felt like they were planning something. The palomino colt trotted up to her and flared his wing. "Hey you," He said. "You better scamper off to Snow Herd before we call the Desert Herd over stallion," He scowled. Moondancer flared her wings and cocked her head. "Please stop," She said calmly. The palomino colt was much taller than she and he glared at her and stomped his hoof.
"Scamper Along," He demanded.
"No," Moondancer fought back and lowered her head and pinned her ears. She felt her heart thumping in her ears and looked up at him hatefully.
"That's it!" He shouted before rearing and clashing down on her side. She stumbled towards the river and tripped. She fell in and felt her body become very cool. She glanced up through the crystal surface at the colt who had pushed her in. He was standing over the edge snickering with the rest of his friends. She realized she couldn't breath and opened her wings and flapped through the water to the surface. She surfaced and took a deep breath. She tossed her wet forelock out of her eyes and looked around. The current was too strong and she being dragged away. She sank underwater when she felt her wings cramp and began to panic. She kicked her legs and tossed her head in the water but it was no use. She opened her mouth and bubbles came out of it and her vision went dark.
