“Stormlake!” Goldsun called out.“
The palomino mare flew side by side to Starbeam. Goldsun relaxed when her filly’s side bumped into her own, but only slightly. At least I still have Starbeam, she comfited herself, but it was no use.
Where was Stormlake? Her filly had gone out with Mintleaf that morning, then the other yearling had come back, saying she was going to catch up later. But it was dark now, and she still hadn’t returned. Like last time, she thought. Tears welled in her eyes as her mate’s determined face appeared in her mind.
“Agghhh!” Goldsun looked down to see her foal falling to her death.
No!” She shot down and caught a silver wing in her mouth. Goldsun realized how tired Starbeam must be, and her own muscles began to ache. “We need rest,” she said reluctantly.
They landed in the meadow as a white mare came down. “Any luck?” she asked the mare, whose name was Sunpetal. A glimmer of hope shimmed inside her.
“Sorry, but no.” Goldsun’s hope disappeared like Stormlake had.
“Okay. Could you keep looking for her?”
“Sure.”
Thanks.” Goldsun and Starbeam walked through the meadow and laid down. She closed her eyes, remembering the last time this happened.
“Where’s Starbeam?” Goldsun asked Redheart. Her filly had been gone for a while, and she was starting to get worried. “I don’t know,” her mate replied. Suddenly, Goldsun heard wingbeats. She turned around to see three Mountain Herd steeds. “What are you doing here?” Redheart snarled, shielding Goldsun and a younger Stormlake. One spoke. “We have your filly. We will trade her for the warrior. He nodded towards Redheart. Her mate turned towards her and they exchanged breaths. She plucked a red feather out of his wing and tied it into her mane. Redheart did the same thing to Stormlake, then turned to the steeds. “Okay.” He flew off with the foreign pegasi. It was the last time she ever saw him.
Goldsun finally fell into a restless sleep, hoping that history wasn’t about to repeat itself...
