Alright so I've been thinking about starting to ride horses! I just can't decide what kind of riding I want to do. Sooo...I was hoping you guys could help me out! Thanks guys!
lol yeah my posting was more like just bouncing along, which really hurt and struggling to lift myself up so nlike imagine a person struggling up and down while bouncing up and down xD
oooh double powers xD and i just saw the barebac comment i would like to try more of it ive only rode bareback once and did some (tried) posting, half-0seat and trotting. my last thought anbout that was OUCH
Well, technically the 'pony' I rode was an Icelandic Horse, but he was under 14.2hh. I've only ridden Quarter Horses, an Appaloosa, the Icelandic I mentioned, and this mix breed pony
Lucky, I've been riding for almost 4 years (on and off) and I've only cantered once, and that was only because I was riding a gaited pony who took off with me
i suggest starting with whatever and let it guide you to do whatever you want. for me its english jumping. eh to dressage maybe cross country. i love cantering
I started jumping a little while ago, but then had a pretty bad fall, so now I'm sticking to riding trail until I think I'm ready for jumping. I started jumping OUTRAGEOUSLY early...... Scared e to the near brink of death lol.
NONNONOONOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Do HUNTERSEAT!!!!!!!!!! BEST THING EVVVERRR!!!!!!!!!! You will love it!! (it's english jumping) I love jumping it's really fun and easy, I highly recommend it! OK sorry, I mean do whatever you feel most comfortable with, I just prefer hunterseat. 😄 ☺️
I think it is probably whatever you start with will be what you get used to, and since you (Cass) have done Western for so long you wouldn't be accustomed to an English saddle, and vice versa for me and people who have done English for longer.
I find the Western saddle so comfortable and it makes me feel a little safer. An English saddle will probably make me feel like I could just sink in the horse or go flying off immediately
Me: I actually started on English and one time I rode western I hated it because the stirrups were so big and I felt weird on that big saddle and really uncomfortable
Nightmist: x has a puzzled expression x WHY DO YOU ALWAYS TELL THEM BEFORE YOUR PEGASI?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! x throws wings up x
Gemfeather: x rolls eyes x You need to calm down Nightmist!!!!!!!!!!!!! x drags her away x
Willowsplash: Really guys? x watchs them x
Nightmist: Really what?!?!?!?!
Gemfeather: Nightmist there's no reason to get angry . . . . .
Nightmist: YES THERE IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Willowslpash: x has a confused look and then gets it x Oh I get it . . . . . . . .
Gemfeather: Willowsplash will you please just help me?!?!?!?!?!
Willowsplash: x shrugs and helps pull her away x
Nightmist: x her loud and angry voice fades away as they drag her into a grove for the LONG talk x
Me: x rolls eyes x Oh my poor O.C.s I am truly sorry you had to see them like that . . . . . . . . . . .
I'm still just learning cantering in English and I think it's complex! Western is probably more relaxed but I honestly sometimes struggle with the weight of an English saddle. x-facepalm-x Anyway, I think it would be an unnecessary extra activity to do Western as well as English.
I ride Western all the time, but mostly herding cows and for the fun of it. Like Flamefrost said, its the “Cowboy Riding Style.” I would love to do English riding too, but only for jumping.
Anyways, I would say start with a Western saddle. They have a horn for you to grip on to so you feel more comfortable. The stirrups are also bigger. The saddle itself is a little more complicating to cinch up and stuff, and its much heavier. But someone will help you with that until you get the hang of it Im sure. Once you master Western riding and have galloped and blah blah blah, then probably go to English for the more experienced stuff. But thats just what I think.
Yeah but back to Logan (sorry I always end up making it about me ), I agree with Dragon. [insert Dragon's comment here]. And bareback can be scary Flamefrost, but i wouldnt know since the only time I ever "rode" bareback was... I think around in the age span of 3 - 6. Idk. I was just up on the horse (a gray [the white term] pony called Mystery) while the owner (my Godmother's daughter) held the reigns so I couldn't signal the horse to go lol. It was on a family trip tomy Godparent's place.
Moonglow: .... yeah..... nobody either asked or needed to know that.
Harrytail: x slaps Moonglow with wing playfully x Is there ever a time when you aren't cheeky?
Yeah I know all about riding I just can't decide what to do! I've been into horses since 2nd grade and I'm in 7th now so I just can't decide! It is a real struggle...I want to either do western pleasure or jumping or dressage.
I do Eastern riding. no, wait- English! Yeah it's English x-facepalm-x
ANYWAY, I think English is more common, but that could be because I live in the Eastern part of the US. In the west, there's Western, so I was confused with Western/Eastern or whatever. (I don't know where you live so I don't know what's most common there.) English is not like the stereotypical "cowboy," English is jumping, eventing, etc. "Cowboy" would be Western. If you go to you tube and type in the search thingy "Dressage Olympic clip" something should come up that in the Olympics is called Dressage, but it's basically English riding. I don't know much about Western style, but you can look into that as well. I've been riding for three-ish years, and I hope you start soon! Both styles I mentioned are fun, but as I already said I don't know much about Western. I really like Eastern though.
That was probably an info overload, but there's my two cents (although in this case it could be ten cents lol).
Yeah, me to. I would love to do more though
Hahahah lol same, I've always wanted to be good at bareback but so far I've only done it a few times.
lol yeah my posting was more like just bouncing along, which really hurt and struggling to lift myself up so nlike imagine a person struggling up and down while bouncing up and down xD
Oh yeah, posting wile riding bare back will be quite the accomplishment
oooh double powers xD and i just saw the barebac comment i would like to try more of it ive only rode bareback once and did some (tried) posting, half-0seat and trotting. my last thought anbout that was OUCH
I know the appaloosa I rode has some Thoroughbred blood in her
oh and i think 1 or 2 off the track thoroughbreds
O: lol ive ridden an Appaloosa, 3 Connemara's i think a half draft quarter cross, 2 quarter horse(i think) and a palomino
That was the one that took off a canter, and because he was gaited I didn't feel the transition, only the increase of speed
Was it a bad ride?
Yeah... I honestly don't think so
An Icelandic???? That's so cool!
Well, technically the 'pony' I rode was an Icelandic Horse, but he was under 14.2hh. I've only ridden Quarter Horses, an Appaloosa, the Icelandic I mentioned, and this mix breed pony
wow thats yikes. the pony i rode once was a tall pony but not quite horse, like 1 or 2 inches below the heifht of a horse
I have very long legs to... but my instructor still put me on the pony
lol only ridden a pony once cause i have very long legs and im tall and they dont really fit me.
we started jumping on my what, 3rd year? ive ridden about 4 years up to oday
It was some variation of that
LOL a tolt right?

I did some 'jumping' last winter, but I don't think I was using a hunterseat

yeah....i have ridden western before but idkkkkkk
Very true
I think it is probably whatever you start with will be what you get used to, and since you (Cass) have done Western for so long you wouldn't be accustomed to an English saddle, and vice versa for me and people who have done English for longer.
Yeah but I beg a differ and anyways we can all have different opinions
I find the Western saddle so comfortable and it makes me feel a little safer. An English saddle will probably make me feel like I could just sink in the horse or go flying off immediately
Yeah me too . . . . . . . . thats probably what's wrong with me and my O.C.s . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
now I'm confused . . . . XD
Me: I actually started on English and one time I rode western I hated it because the stirrups were so big and I felt weird on that big saddle and really uncomfortable

I’d recommend English. But that’s my opinion. Western is relaxing and easier on the horses back.
Because that's Emi's special skill, writing stuff to make us laugh
Why do Moonglow and Harrytail alsways make me laugh so much?? lol
O brother
Yeah but back to Logan (sorry I always end up making it about me ), I agree with Dragon. [insert Dragon's comment here]. Harrytail: x grins x
It can be at first, but it's a really easy way to get a better seat.
bareback sounds really frightening to me for some reason.
Maybe you could find a place that lets you go back and forth until you decide. And my personal preference is bareback
lol thats ok! its not very common so it easily gets forgotten...
sorry I made a fuss about that
Oops! I looked it up. http://westerndressageassociation.org/
Um, there is no such thing as Western Dressage, at least that I know of. Dressage is a subdivision of English riding.
(Dragon, little help here?)
DO ENGLISH JUMPING OR ENGLISH DRESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well that's my opinion I didn't mean to sound like i'm the boss LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do English hunter/jumper (haven't gotten to jumping yet though) and I love it!! If I have horses as an adult I will probably do English pleasure
Yeah I know all about riding I just can't decide what to do! I've been into horses since 2nd grade and I'm in 7th now so I just can't decide! It is a real struggle...I want to either do western pleasure or jumping or dressage.
