Over the next few days, Brackenfire started getting used to herd life once again. As Captain in the River Herd Army, he was rarely around as he was mainly leading patrols, speaking with his under-captains, or talking strategies with the other Captains of the army.
Starwing, however, was taking a little more time to get used to his new role as Over-Stallion. He lead a patrol or two every day to help take some stress off of his Captains, he was bombarded constantly with questions from his Herd Members and even the council, and on top of that was the added stress of the intimate migration to warmer climates. Sure he had the Council to help, but most of the responsibility of leading was his own, and it caused a lot of stress on the black steed.
For Aquawind, however, her life couldn’t have been any better. She trotted across the field with her sister, Shadowlake.
“Can you believe Dad was chosen to lead the whole herd!?” She asked with a wide smile. Shadowlake shook her head, her black mane flowing slightly in the cool wind.
“No, I can’t.” She replied simply.
“I mean…he can tell the whole herd what to do, and they HAVE to listen to him!” She said with a bright smile.
Shadowlake rolled her eyes, “No, I’m sure the Council still has the final say.” She said.
“Still! He’s the Over-Stallion! And Mom’s the Lead Mare!” She said. “I mean, can’t you just…hey, don’t ignore me.” She said, nudging her sister with her aqua and black wing. Shadowlake shook her head to clear it, looking apologetically at her sister.
“Sorry, Aquawind.” She said with a slight grimace, “I was just thinking…”
“Thinking about what?” Aquawind interrupted with a curious tilt of her head.
Shadowlake indicated across the field where Brackenfire was standing, grazing, and watching over the herd, “He always seems to be alone…” She murmured.
Aquawind nodded, “Not to mention he seems to watch mom a lot…” She muttered back.
Shadowlake shrugged, “I’m sure it’s nothing.” She said, “C’mon! Let’s go see if Hopeflame will tell us a story!” She nickered.
“Who’d want to hear a story from her!?” Asked a familiar, and unwanted, voice. Aquawind spun around and faced Goldcliff, her nostrils flaring angrily.
“We do!” She nickered angrily, fluffing out her feathers in indignation.
“Why don’t you just leave us alone, Goldcliff?” Shadowlake nickered softly, pinning her ears back.
Goldcliff snorted rolling his eyes, “Because it’s fun.” He nickered.
Aquawind shot forward, getting in his muzzle, her wings flaring angrily. “Why don’t you just go away!?” She hissed angrily.
“Maybe you should make me!” He snarled back. This enraged Aquawind, but before she could strike any blow on the buckskin colt, the call of the Over-Stallion rang across the clearing, causing everyone to pause and see what was going on. Another call answered, one Aquawind had never heard before.
‘Who is that?’ Aquawind thought to herself, ‘And where is Dad?’
