Seashade walked to Stoneheart. “Would you want to be forced to do what your lead mare says?” asked Seashade. “Tell me.” Stoneheart’s ears drooped a bit. “No, I wouldn’t but that’s what I did. . .” said Stoneheart, turning on her mother. “This is your fault, Echocloud!”
Echocloud reared, angry. “So what? I only did this because you don’t listen! You deserve this. You created so many rifts between me and you because you are self-centered and arrogant. You might be powerful, but you’re alone. And I hope it remains that way.”
Stoneheart and Echocloud tried to blast each other with their magic, but Seashade teleported in between them. “Let me kill her! She is not a real Mother. This is all her fault, she deserves this.” screamed Stoneheart.
I hope I never see you again ‘Mother’. thought Stoneheart. Tears streamed from Stoneheart’s eyes as she flew away. “Stoneheart, wait! Please!” shouted Seashade. She flew quickly after her. “What do you want, Seashade?” asked Stoneheart.
Seashade sat down next to Stoneheart and placed a wing over her back. “I want to help you. I can help you handle your family problems if you want me to, but it’s your choice.” said Seashade. “I’ll leave you alone now. I’ll be in the Moon Herd lands if you need me.”
When Seashade got to Moon Herd, she saw Aspenbreeze sitting alone. “Hey Aspenbreeze, why are you out here alone?” asked Seashade as she sat down next to her friend. Aspenbreeze turned to look at Seashade. “No reason, but why did you follow Stoneheart, to kill her or something?” asked Aspenbreeze.
Seashade started to wonder if Stoneheart was lying. “I didn’t kill her, I helped her. She has . . . issues, so I asked her if she wanted to come here if she needed anything.” said Seashade. Aspenbreeze was very upset by this. “Why? Why did you bring that thing to our herd? You’ve killed us! I’m going to tell Stormwing about this.”
A while later Stormwing approached Seashade and Stoneheart. “Why did you agree with her, Seashade? I thought you were here to help us,” he snorted bitterly. “So much for that.”
Seashade moved in front of Stoneheart. “The reason I agreed with her was because she is being shunned by her herd. She doesn’t deserve that. No one does, not even the worst creature ever like she was.” said Seashade.
Stormwing didn’t like this at all. So, he pretended to agree with her. “I suppose so. Fine, she can come but she stays with you and you only. Understood? I will not risk that monster killing my herd.” said Stormwing. Stoneheart saw her mother, Echocloud.
She started backing away as her mother landed, knowing she was going to be in trouble. “Stoneheart, why would you leave? I told you to stay within the borders!” said Echocloud. Seashade grew very angry. She blasted Echocloud in the side with her magic, making her fall to the ground. “Leave her alone, Echocloud.” said Seashade.
As Echocloud got up, Stoneheart fled. “That is why she is like this. She was being shunned. Why? Echocloud told the herd to shun Stoneheart, and she never felt guilty about it.” said Seashade. “As for you Echocloud, you will dethrone yourself as Lead Mare of Sun Herd. You are no longer Echocloud, you are now Echoheart. Say goodbye to your position.”
Seashade flew off to find Stoneheart and bring her home. “Stoneheart? Where are you? I’ve done what you wanted. I’ve dethroned Echocloud.” said Seashade.
How could you, Seashade? thought Stoneheart. “Hello? Stoneheart? Come out please.” said Seashade. Stoneheart flew down from the tree she was hiding in.
“Oh, hi Seashade.” said Stoneheart. “Why are you here?”
“I came to tell you the news, Echoheart is not a lead mare,” said Seashade. Stoneheart gasped, looking angry. “What! I didn't want you to dethrone her!” neighed Stoneheart. “Ugh, fine. I guess I have to be the lead mare of Sun Herd now. I hope you know, I’m not ready to be a lead mare yet. So, if my herd starves, it will be your fault and yours alone.”
Seashade and Stoneheart flew back to their herds. When Seashade arrived at Moon Herd, Echoheart was still there, pinned to the ground. Seashade used her horn to turn Echoheart from a winged-unicorn to a horse. “What have you done to me? I will tell my herd about this!” neighed Echoheart.
Echoheart galloped back to Sun Herd, but she could not control the steeds anymore, because she was not the lead mare. When she arrived, her filly was laying down in the shade.
Echoheart saw Stoneheart lying under her tree. She started hurling insults at Stoneheart, who was now Stonecloud. “Echoheart, you are banished from Sun Herd for the rest of your life.” Stonecloud glanced behind her, toward her army. “If she returns, kill her on sight.”
Echoheart's eyes grew wide. To the herds, banishment was a punishment worse than death. She charged Stonecloud, enraged that her daughter had stolen her position, and almost reached her as her warriors blocked her, biting the tops of her ears and neck until she bowed her head in submission. “Now Echoheart, leave this herd.” Stonecloud reared, threatening Echoheart with her deadly hooves. Stonecloud slammed her hooves against the grass, causing Echoheart to slip and fall. Echoheart turned and galloped away from her former herd.
I’ll be back for you, Stoneheart. thought Echoheart. As she galloped away, Stonecloud sent a battalion of about five hundred warriors after Echoheart, and they gained on her quickly.
She dodged their sharpened hooves. She even stopped and bucked, striking a stallion in his wing, breaking it. “I can still fight you and your stupid herd!” whinnied Echoheart.
She pumped her neck and galloped toward Moon Herd. She waited behind a rock, and when a mare came her way, she shoved her very sharp hoof through the mare’s wing, making her fall to the ground and squeal in pain. She kept galloping toward Moon Herd.
Sweating, blood-stained, and herdless, she dropped her haunches and tried to stop, but she landed in a lake. Seashade thought it was Aspenbreeze, so she cantered toward the lake. When she realized that it was Echoheart, she reared, threatening her. Echoheart bowed her head, quivering in fear and shock.
“Stonecloud has sent warriors after me, and they will attack Moon Herd. You must hide your steeds before they get here.” said Echoheart. Stormwing reared and brayed, calling for his army.
The Moon Herd army came and gathered in formation, with the biggest steeds in the front and the smaller steeds at the back. The Sun Herd battalion searched the herd for Echoheart, found her, and glided toward her.
Moon Herd let the battalion take Echoheart, letting her fight for her life. As she bucked and kicked, Seashade helped the Sun Herd steeds get Echoheart. “Now tell me, why are there warriors raiding?!” asked Stormwing in a roar.
Echoheart grumbled but told him. “Stoneheart, who is now Stonecloud, banished me, so I galloped here and thought that . . .” she said, trailing off.
