Part 1: A Desert Peace
The Red Rock Mountains glowed a dim red in the dawn light, the sun barely above the horizon. The early light, however, did not stop a young filly by the name of Sunsky from getting up with the dawn. Sneaking out of her family’s cave was easy, her father, Adderfire, was away on a scouting mission with some of the other Desert Herd steeds, and her mother, Amberfeather, always slept like a rock since she worked with her Sky Herders until near early morning. While getting out of her cave was easy, making it to the bottom of the Red Rock Mountains was going to be hard. Some of the captains were awake and on sentry duty, while other steeds were early risers like her. If she did not play this right, she’d never make it to the meeting point on the bank of the Tail River. Spreading her wide gold wings, she leapt off of the rocky surface, keeping her chestnut body close to the craggy surface of the Red Rock Mountains. She was almost to the bottom where she would make a run for the river when a voice boomed from above her.
“Hey! Stop!” Commanded a young buckskin stallion, his wings a light yellow. He took off from his perch and began a slow dive towards her.
“Oh great…” Murmured Skysun. She knew she wouldn’t be able to out run the stallion, she knew her best chance of escaping his advance was to outwit him.
“Stop!” The stallion ordered again, more harshly this time. Skysun glanced behind her, if her plan was going to work, she’d need some distance. She dove sharply, nosediving towards a cliff, the stallion following her closely. Skysun slowed slightly to let the stallion get on her tail. Right before she hit the rocky surface of the cliff she pulled out of the dive, the stallion, however, was not so quick. He had to throw out his wings to catch the air and slow his decent, causing him to have to land on the cliff, and by the time he had gained his bearings, Skysun had disappeared. “Where did she…” The stallion muttered, looking around in confusion. Skysun was huddling a cave, straining her ears to catch any sign of the pursuing stallion. When she heard no sign, she sighed taking flight. She smirked to herself as she glided through the dawn sky. The smirk was still on her face when she landed on the bank of the Tail River, her best friend, Breezeheart, glancing at her curiously.
“You’re here!” She said with delight. “What are you smiling about?” She asked with a curious tilt of her head. Skysun’s smile only grew.
“Oh, nothing, I only was able to evade a Captain on my way here!”
Breezeheart rolled her eyes. “Let me guess, you used your signature trick? The Dive and Hide?”
Skysun nodded with pleasure.
“You know one day someone besides me will figure out your tricks. Or at the very least, see what you’re going to do.”
Skysun shrugged, undaunted by that statement. “So? It won’t be any time soon, and if it works it works, why change it?”
Breezeheart shrugged. “I’m just saying, maybe you should think of some new tricks.”
“Maybe, I’ll think about it.” Skysun said, ruffling her golden feathers. Skysun’s dark chestnut friend just shook her head in exasperation.
“Anyway, are you ready to practice?”
Skysun smirked happily. “Oh yeah!”
“Then let’s go!” Breezeheart replied, spreading her dull red wings. The two fillies took off north along the Tail River, heading away from the protection of the Herd.
