I should have, but I didn't do an extra double check. Hope you like it!
Firesong loved listening to the songs of the birds as they sang through the air. She heard many times how her name had been decided and loved the tale. She glanced behind her at Silvercrest as he soared close by. They both stayed close enough to the ground that if their young wings failed them, they wouldn’t be injured, but high enough that the thrill of it filled their hearts.
Pretty soon they were winded and swooped down to the ground to catch their breath, the sun now high in the sky they watched another patrol glide by in perfect formation before either one spoke
“I want to do that one day,” Silvercrest breathed, “Fly high above the trees, scanning the ground for threats to the herd!” He said animatedly.
“Me two,” Firesong said smiling at her best friend. He had a sparkle in his eyes whenever he talked about, or saw captains doing their jobs.
Silvercrest folded his wings neatly at his sides and leaned down to eat the soft grass beneath their hooves. Since they were both weaned, they usually ate together.
Firesong leaned down to eat as well before she looked back towards a tree line a few feet away. She thought she had seen something. The Sun was fading at the night time hues where falling on the meadow.
Silvercrest lifted his head and looked at her questioningly, He followed her gaze to the tree line, “What are you looking at?”
She could have sworn she had seen the black foal…but how could that be? Would he come here? “It was nothing, just thought I saw something,” She lowered her head to graze trying to keep her eyes on the tree line.
Silvercrest gave her an ‘I don’t believe you’ look, but he returned to munching on the soft green grass. He kept glancing at Firesong, his heart doing a slight dance with every look. He hadn’t realized he had felt this way about her until he had been gone. He didn’t dare tell a soul. He wasn’t ready.
They finished eating and trotted back to the safety of the other Dams. Firesong stayed with Silvercrest playing while she waited for one of her parents to come get her for the night.
Wispcloud swooped down from the darkening sky and landed near them. She trotted over nickering a greeting to Silvercrest’s dam, Rosethorn. A dark brown mare with rose red wings tipped with black.
Rosethorn nodded respectfully at the lead mare.
“You guys have a good day,” She asked nuzzling firesong lovingly.
Firesong leaned into her mother breathing in the familiar, calming smell, “It was great mommy!”
Silvercrest smiled. He knew Firesong wished she could spend more time with her parents, but he also knew that she knew the importance of what they do. “They day was great.”
Wispcloud smiled, “I hope you had fun on your journey young one.” She said glancing happily at Rosethorn who was smiling and watching.
Silvercrest’s chest puffed out a bit as he stood straighter, “it was a blast! I learned so much,”
Wispcloud nodded then looked at Firesong, “Shall we go?”
Firesong nodded the nickered, “See you tomorrow Silvercrest and Rosethorn!”
Firesong and Wispcloud took off into the air towards Dustwing. His silhouette visible against the setting sun, the meadow turning the cool night colors.
The air chilled as she landed next to Dustwing. He looked lovingly at her, “Firesong,” HE always said her name in a singsong way that made her heart flutter with joy.
She leaned into her father gazing up into his loving eyes, “Daddy!” She said happily breathing in his scent.
Dustwing led them to their spot and lay down opening his wing. Firesong lay next to his side as he lowered his wing protectively over her.
Wispcloud smiled at her mate and filly. She lay down near her mates head and they nuzzled each other lovingly sharing breath. They all shut their eyes feeling the calm moment.
