This chapter went from 1/2 of a page to 3 pages in the span of like 2 nights XD I know, I keep saying @Iceberry will be in this one, but my characters just keep on adding and adding and ADDING to it, and it would have been WAY too long. But next chapter, I PROMISE.
Sablestone woke up with a jolt at dawn. His head still groggy from sleep, It takes a moment for him to remember the events of the day before. Then it all comes back to him
Taking the weanling to the Void.
Cloudfire and his team.
Riverglade and Lightbreeze.
“Ahem,” A stallion next to him cleared his throat, getting Sablestone’s attention. It was one of Stormwing’s captains, Rustfire.
Oh no, Sablestone thought. He must be here to take me away. Sure enough, that is exactly what the large chestnut stallion had come to do. “Get up,” Rustfire told him. Sablestone reluctantly got up.
“Follow me,” Rustfire said, turning around and walking through the trees. Sablestone cast one last forlorn glance at Canyon Herd, then followed the captain.
The rest of Canyon Herd was asleep, for which Sablestone was thankful for. He couldn’t bear to see the hurt look of anguish and betrayal on Mistfeather’s face. Rusfire and Sablestone trotted in silence for about an hour. Eventually, Sablestone asked “Where are you taking me?”
“Stormwing has instructed me to take you to our side of the Void that is closest to Forest Herd’s territory. He believes their new overstallion Dustwing will accept you, as he is looking to expand the herd.” Rustfire said, not looking at him. “But if it were my choice of what we do with you, I would break your wings.”
Sablestone gasped. Only then did Rustfire look at him. “And I just might. But I have a proposal. Follow me.” The chestnut stallion said, trotting into a grove of trees. Sablestone followed, intrigued.
They entered the trees, the early morning light sending prisms of color reflecting off of the autumn leaves. Rustfire turned around and faced Sablestone, looking around to make sure no one else was near them. “I”m going to make this quick,” He said in a hushed tone. Sablestone pricked his ears. “I’ve seen how you and Mistfeather look at each other. You broke her trust and heart when you betrayed the herd and helped the fillies get captured. I can help you get her trust back and rejoin Canyon Herd.” Rustfire said, pacing back and forth in front of Sablestone.
“Stormwing is weak. He is afraid of the very thing we pegasi thrive on: War. He doesn’t have proper protection and sentries, he is unwilling to save his and his top captains’ daughters for fear of war.” He spat on the ground in disgust. “I have a plan to save Canyon Herd, and I will need your help. If you help me, and we succeed, I will guarantee you join Canyon Herd again.”
Sablestone reeled back, slightly hurt at Rustfire’s bitter words against Stormwing. Nearly everything the chestnut captain said that supposedly made Stormwing a bad leader is what Sablestone admired in the grullo ovestallion. His gut knew to not agree to whatever plan Rustfire had, but then his heart gave a painful throb, and he enivsioned Mistfeather’s hurt expression. He had vowed to win back her trust, and, hopefully, her heart, and he will stand by that vow. “What are you proposing?” He asked Rustfire.
The chestnut trotted closer. “What I’m proposing is: You help me overthrow Stormwing, I will help you get Mistfeather back.”
Sablestone’s eyes widened, torn. He truly loved Misfeather, and would do anything to get her back, but… overthrowing an overstallion?
Rustfire stamped his hoof on the soil, impatient and needing an answer. “So, what will it be?”
Sablestone looked at the stallion. “I”m going to need some time,” He said.
Rustfire pinned his ears slightly. “You have until sundown.” He said, glancing at the sun. “There is a cave a few winglengths west. Go deep into it, and there should be a pond with safe drinking water. Hide in there so the patrols don’t see you. I will be back at sundown. Have an answer ready for me. I don’t like to wait.”
And with that, he flared his light orange wings and flew back towards Canyon Herd, leaving Sablestone to make what could possibly be the biggest decision of his life.
