I may delete this, but here is a sneak peek of a story I was writing about a girl named Jaxi.
Note: This story begins in the second month of 42 BBY.
She’d expected it, but still hadn’t seen it coming.
So when they’d come to take her she’d been caught unaware and was captured.
Tough luck, she thought, pacing her cell. And that’s it.
But she knew it wasn’t. She’d been careless. It was her fault, and nothing else.
Trapped in a Force-cell, with no way out for the rest of her life — she’d never thought it’d come to this. True, she had been getting careless, showing more — ahem — tendencies but she thought no one had noticed.
What a fool she was. The Jedi Council noticed everything.
Except for the things which really mattered.
She barked a short laugh into the silence. She was losing her mind — she couldn’t stay isolated in the Citadel like this forever, not her. She had to be active.
I made a very poor Jedi. Just about thirteen years as a Jedi; I was awful.
But now I am no longer a Jedi.
I’m nothing. A prisoner, if even that.
Crackling drew her attention to the speaker in the corner near the ceiling. A smooth, regulated voice was emitted, and despite herself Jaxi paid attention. “A visitor is here to see you, Jaxi Qest.”
Interesting. She hadn’t thought the Citadel allowed visitors. If it was who she thought it was….
Turning to face the door, Jaxi re-did her low brown ponytail, pulled one half over each shoulder so that the long ends which faded to black hung down her chest, and stood with her feet apart and her hands clasped behind her back, her green eyes narrowed, listening. Footsteps echoed in the hall and approached her door, then stopped. Jaxi tensed.
The door hissed open and Nichos Zabre — so she’d been right — stepped inside, his gaze finding her and holding her spellbound for a moment with the intensity of pain in his eyes. As the door closed, they stood facing each other, not speaking.
Nichos broke the silence. “Jaxi.”
“Nichos.” The unspoken thank-you hung in the air, and she knew he understood. He always had.
“I never thought I’d see you here.” Nichos looked away, his eyes roving the sparse cell, sweeping over the bed and the door to the bathroom in the corner. “It took me a month to get permission to visit you. I assume they took away your lightsaber?”
So he’d been asking ever since it’s happened. “Yes.” She turned away. “Why are you here, Nichos?” Truth be told, she did miss the comforting weight of her lightsaber in her hand; but all that was over. She’d never handle a lightsaber again.
“You’re my friend. I thought a visit was appropriate.”
You are. Not you were. “Here I am.”
“Jaxi, why are you here?”
Jaxi sighed and spoke without emotion. “I am not a good Jedi. I ‘fell from the path’ and forfeited my outside life. Or so that’s what the Council told me. Not a good Temple Guard. I never asked to be a Temple Guard. But they chose me anyway.” She looked back at him.
Nichos seemed to be waiting for something, his face taught and expectant. Then, suddenly, the lights went out.
Jaxi didn’t cry out — she was too good for that. “What’s going on?” she asked into the pitch darkness.
“Voice down.” Nichos ordered. “Listen, Jaxi, you are my friend. The power outage has temporarily shut off the cameras, so I’m telling you this now: I’m getting you out of here.”
It’s the Citadel, you idiot. “When?”
“Soon. Just be ready, Jaxi.”
The power flickered back on and Nichos turned to go, the lights highlighting his unruly blond hair and angled face.
Goodbye, Nichos, Jaxi thought as the door hissed shut behind him. See you never.
Wowow!
