I decided to keep posting the chapters, because people seemed to like them. Here's chapter five!
“You let them escape!” The King thundered angrily. Ember stood her ground and looked him dead in the eye, which not many had the courage to do. “Yes, Sire. They did escape. I was caught off guard and did not think we would be ambushed. Are you implying that I am not capable of killing a group of inadequate rebels?” She demanded, with a deadly tone. She clenched her jaw and raised an eyebrow at him, daring him to question her again. Richard visibly gulped.
No one in their right mind would ever dream of making the young Flare angry. Everyone knew what the General could do to them if they did. No one wanted that.
“No, I was not saying that you were incapable. I was just thinking-” He tried to explain. “You just were thinking what? You were just thinking that I am unqualified to do my job?” Ember accused. “Your majesty, I mean no offense by this, but you have been questioning my abilities often over these past few months. If you no longer find me as a promising general then give me a lower position, or don’t give me a new one at all. But, if you still wish to have my services stop doubting me,” she seethed.
Ember didn’t wait for the King’s reply, she just walked out of the room without another word.
Ember leaned on the doorframe of the school, watching as the young children joined with their parents. Her eyes wandered around the place. She felt a small pair of arms wrap around her waist. She looked down and smiled at the young boy. Ember picked him up and he hugged her neck.
“How was school today, Samuel?” She asked him. Samuel nodded. “It was great! We learned how to knock an arrow!” He beamed. Ember gave him a loving smile. “That sounds wonderful. Let’s get home alright?”
Her brother nodded, and she lowered him back to the ground. “We also learned about a time called the… um.. Oh! It was called ‘The Purge’ I think,” the boy looked at his sister in hope of confirmation. Oh why, why, did they have to teach children such horrific things? Ember sighed, and nodded reluctantly. “Yes, that is the correct name,” she said in surprise. Samuel smiled proudly.
“Before we go home, would we be able to see Jay?”
Sorry, this chapter is a little short. Samuel has just entered this book, and I already adore him. Sam is not her real brother, Ember sort of just... adopted him as her brother I guess. Jay is going to be introduced in the next chapter! I have an idea about what kind of person he is, but I need to add more details. Another thing, what do you guys think that the 'Purge' is?
