Stormlake rushed to Nightfire. “Storm!” she yelled.
Nightfire’s eyes opened. “What do you want, filly?”
“Storm!” she yelled again, louder.
Nightfire scrambled to his hooves. “Everyone up! Now!” There were groans as pegasi woke up and got to their feet.
“Follow me.” Nightfire flew up into the clouds. The herd followed. Stormlake rose into the air and followed Nightfire. Rain soaked her pelt and wings, making her heavy body hard to fly with. Lightning struck the sky, making Stormlake jump.
She flew through the dark clouds and into the sunlight. Stormlake blinked. It was much brighter than before. Blue sky surrounded her. Pegasi appeared out of the clouds.
They hovered there for a few minutes. Someone spoke. “When can we go down?”
“When the storm’s over,” Nightfire said.
But that’ll be ages! Stormlake didn’t share her opinion though. The rest of the herd seemed to be thinking the same thing, but like her, they kept quiet.
After half an hour, a colt’s wings gave out. He fell, disappearing in the clouds. A mare gave out a cry before flying after him. That’s the mother, Stormlake thought.
After a moment, a piercing cry of pain and grief filled the air. Stormlake felt a tug on her heart to help the steed. She flew through the clouds and landed. The mare she’d seen earlier was kneeling over the colt that fell. She was crying.
Stormlake rushed over to them. The colt was lying still on the ground with his eyes closed. He was breathing, but barely. The time between each breath was getting longer and longer. The whole herd was watching him.
Rosepuddle went over to the colt and picked him up in her wings. “He’ll heal,” she promised before leaving.
Nightfire spoke to Pinewing. “We need more foals. Do you want me to get some?”
“Yes,” Pinewing said.
Nightfire nodded before flying away with a few other steeds.
They traveled for a moon. The autumn leaves fell off the trees, covering the ground with crumpled brown. Stormlake and Moonmist played together, becoming good friends. They told each other about their old lives. Moonmist had a twin brother, but she told her that he was like Lorywind, and it was best she didn’t meet him. Nightfire hadn’t come back with the foals yet.
One day, Pinewing spoke. “We are now at the Flatlands.”
Cheers came from the herd. Stormlake felt excitement in the air.
Grass stretched as far as the eye could see. Creeks, rivers and streams ran across the land. There was a cottonwood forest to their right.
They landed. Happy tears came from the steeds. Stormlake walked away, not feeling like the rest of the herd. She sighed, sad tears rolling down her face as she thought of her family.
Her sobs were interrupted by wolves howling.
