Stormlake took a step backwards. Her rump hit a pegasus. She turned her head around to see Rosepuddle. The dark brown mare ruffled her feathers in thought. “Lorywind is very protective,” she commented, “a bit too much for my liking, but her heart is in the right place.”
Stormlake hid behind Rosepuddle while Lorywind stood with her wings flared and teeth bared.
After a few terrifying moments, the mare left with Moonmist by her side.
Stormlake sighed in relief as she stepped out from behind Rosepuddle. Why does she hate me so much? she wondered. She decided she would see Moonmist tonight.
Under the cover of darkness, Stormlake silently stood up and began walking. She wanted to escape, but there was a guard. He gave her a suspicious look, then realising she wasn’t planning to fly away, he ignored her. Stormlake reached Moonmist. She was curled up with Lorywind and a gray colt with dark turquoise wings. She shook her. “Wake up.”
Moonmist’s light blue eyes half opened. “What do you want?” she groaned. Then she gasped, “Stormlake? Why aren’t you asleep?” Moonmist scrambled to her hooves.
Stormlake stood tall and spoke. “Why does Lorywind hate me so much?” she asked determinedly.
“You’re the filly of Redheart, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Stormlake answered slowly, wondering how she knew about her deceased sire.
Moonmist sighed. “Well, when mama was only a weanling, there was a war between Sun Herd, Mountain Herd and Desert Herd. Mama’s parents were fighting. Redheart was fighting too, and he killed both of her parents. Mama was then left to fend for herself.”
Sorrow filled Stormlake’s heart. “That’s terrible,” she whispered.
“I know,” Moonmist said, “and that’s why mama hates you. She doesn’t trust you, you see.”
Stormlake glanced at the horizon. The sun was coming up. “I have to go. Nightfire will become suspicious if I don’t wake up next to him.”
Stormlake headed back to Nightfire. Suddenly, she froze. A bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a roar of thunder.
